Chapter Seven: Beer. I wake up early and decided to go to work earlier than I used to before. To make sure that Mr. Davids wasn’t there yet when I come. What just happened tomorrow is more embarrassing than what happened when he just thanked me. While eating breakfast, I was planning on how am I going to ignore him because I know even though he wasn’t like the type of man who’ll tease me about that, again, what I just thought and said yesterday was really embarrassing. I am so glad when I came to the office and I was the first one who was there. I quickly run into my table and sat on my swivel chair hoping that Mr. Davids would be late. And as if God really heard what I prayed, Jojo and Mitchell came yet Mr. Davids didn’t come earlier like he used to before. “Where’s Davids?” Jojo asked as he was preparing for the prosecution later. I shrugged, “Don’t know.” I started to read the documents on my table but my mind was running into something. My mind was on Mr. Davids who was actually late right now. I was thinking of why he is late. He always comes earlier so why? I want to ignore him being late but I can't help but think about him. “Mr. Davids!” Mitchell called. I turned my head and looked at the door but no one’s there only to find out that Mitchell was on the phone. “Yeah, yeah. Don’t worry about it. You should take some rest,” Mitchell said. I started to get curious. Why should Mr. Davids have to get some rest? It’s a day off yesterday! “We understand you, everyone can get sick.” When Mitchell turned off his phone. I want to ask him what happened but I decided not to because Jojo might think another thing. That I really had a crush on Mr. Davids. “Davids had a fever,” Mitchell said without us asking. “Ooh,” Jojo replied. “Really? What happened?” I got worried about him. Yesterday, he was totally fine! “I don’t know, he just said he has a fever.” I didn’t add another question because my heart felt so tight. How did he get a fever? He was strong and looks healthy yesterday and now he had sick! My whole day was like, I was a bit irritable. I don’t know why am I being like this but I keep on thinking of Mr. Davids. Like, how can he have a fever? How can he manage to take care of himself if he has no one by his side? I was worried sick. I keep on looking at his table to check if he really didn’t go to work right now. If I was just imagining things but no, he is now absent and has a fever. At the end of the day, I sigh and scolded myself because I’m worried about my colleague. I shouldn’t be like this. Before going home, I bought a tub of vanilla ice cream to calm myself. It was my favorite flavor and it calms me every time I’m stressed. And I feel like I am getting stressed right now! “Gosh, don’t think about him Antonette, he was just a co-worker so you don’t have to care for him outside the office,” I scolded myself. While eating ice cream, I decided to watch music videos of my favorite k-pop boy group; Exo. They were my husbands; in my dreams. Really, I’m a big fan. But I haven’t had the chance to go to their concert since I’m busy at work and don’t have enough money. I find comfort while watching their music videos. I was dancing and singing with the rhythm of their music while eating my ice cream when I got a text message from an unknown sender. I pause the video and took my phone beside my laptop. I read the message and was surprised. Unknown: This is me, can you join me for a beer? My brow arched at the message. Who is this texting me in the middle of the night? And asking to join him or her for beer? Is this some kind of joke? I was about to send a reply when a mysterious sender sent another message. Unknown: But it’s fine with me if you don’t want to. I was just really sad right now. Unknown: I feel really sick at my house. I felt alone. Unknown: I’m waiting outside your house. My eyes widened. Really? I ran onto my window and look if there’s a person there. To my surprise, I saw Mr. Davids, standing there holding a plastic bag on his right hand and on the other was his phone. He looked up at me and I saw his fluffy eyes. I saw how miserable his expression was. My heart tightens seeing him like that. I thought he has a fever? I immediately ran through the main door and go outside. He was there and I felt worried because Mitchell said he was sick. “Why are you here?” I asked after I’m finally in front of him. He smiled at me, but it didn’t reach his ear. His eyes were so sad that I even felt what he was feeling right now. “I know you’re not okay, Mitchell said you had a fever. Why are you here, then?” I asked him again. He lifted the plastic bag he was holding. “Join me for a drink?” I stopped asking him a question. He invited me to go outside and I joined him. The whole ride in his car was silent. I was amazed that he has a car because he never brings it to work. I don’t know why. “Why aren’t you using this car? This is the first time I saw this, ” I asked because it was so silent. There are only a few cars on the road and it was making the night calm. “Because every time I used this, I remembered my family, ” he simply said. I bit my lower lip. Wrong question.
