CHAPTER 1
Knight woke up from a bad dream. He is panting and sweating heavily. He got up and sat on his bed, massaging his head.
“f**k. This f*****g hurt,” he whispered.
Knight shook his head and glanced at the nightstand where his clock was.
It’s just 2:00 AM. It’s still midnight, and he can’t go back to sleep.
Knight lay down on his soft mattress. He rested his arm on his forehead and stared at the ceiling, thinking of his dream. No, it’s not a dream because that’s his nightmare. The nightmares that keep on bugging and eating his guilt.
He was no longer visited by drowsiness, so he decided to get up and start his workout. He changed his clothes to a simple plain white shirt and track pants. He took his keys and wallet to the nightstand before leaving his house.
It’s 3:00 AM and the hallway of his house is full of armed men. There are a few maids who start cleaning the house. Some of his men and maids are greeting him and he answers with a curt nod.
“Where are you going, Knight? It’s still early to leave,” His butler, Dante, said while glancing at his watch.
“I’ll just run a few laps.”
Dante stood beside him. “Is it your nightmares, again?” Knight didn’t answer, but Dante already knew the answer. “You should forget and move forward, Knight. Your Grandma is already dead-”
Knight cut him off. “It’s my fault, Dante. This is nothing from what Grandma went through at the hands of those bastards.” His teeth gritted in rage as he recalled what happened to his Grandma.
Knight put on the ear pods and left Dante on the patio. Knight started running.
A few hours passed, and he was out of breath and sweating. Running helps Knight to forget his dream. Knight's running gradually slows down. From a distance, he could already see Dante waiting for him.
Dante handed him a bottle of water. He accepted it and drank it, then returned the bottle once he finished. Next, he reached for the towel. He wiped his sweat-covered face before moving on to his neck and arms.
"Has Marco arrived?" Knight asked.
Dante shook his head. "He's not here yet."
He handed her the towel. "Call me when he arrives."
"Yes, Sir. Are you going to eat here? Emelia prepared breakfast and coffee," Dante asked while following him up the stairs.
"Coffee will be fine," he said as he entered his room.
Knight put down his phone and keys before entering the bathroom.
He turned on the shower, and as it warmed up, he began to strip all his clothes. He left not a single one. When he finished, he turned off the shower. Only a towel covered his lower body.
When he stepped out, he saw his suit ready in the middle of his bed. After getting himself ready, he took the watch that his Grandma had last given him. He placed the keys, wallet, and phone inside the pocket of his suit, and lastly, he put his gun behind him.
Knight was about to go down when his phone rang. It’s his dad who’s calling.
As much as he liked to cancel the call, he knew his father too well. He sighed before answering his phone.
“Dad.”
“Where are you, son?” Dad asked.
“I’m still at home. Why?”
"Have you talked to Marco? We need information, Knight, bribe him if you need to… I'm getting impatient.”
Knight tightened his grip on his phone. "I'm meeting him now."
He understands his father, and why he is getting impatient. He had long instructed Marco to gather information about one of the Capes whom he believed was taking bribes from the local police.
Marco was a big help to him and the mafia whenever they needed him, and in return, he got a large sum of money, enough for him to live in total luxury with his wife.
"You're slowing down, Knight," his father noticed. "Work faster before we get outpaced by the enemies." "Don't let me down again," his father said before ending the call.
"f**k this life," he whispered and went straight to the kitchen.
He sat down and took a sip of his coffee. He was peacefully sipping his coffee when Dante entered the kitchen.
"Sir, Marco has arrived," Dante announced.
“Tell him that I’ll meet him on the porch.”
"Yes, Sir." Before he could completely leave the kitchen, Dante approached him again. "Sir, I forgot to tell you. Marco is in the garden with his three children – Erin, Emmett, and Jillian.”
Knight just nodded before heading to the porch. Marco was already there when he arrived.
“Good morning, Mr. Martinez.”
“Did you find something, Marco?” He asked straightly.
“I found something…” Marco said, handing him a large brown envelope.
“Is it everything?” Knight asked as he grabbed the envelope. He looked inside the envelope. That's all? This is still not enough. Knight threw the envelope on the table.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Knight. Give me more time to look further. "I promise I’m almost there,” Marco begged.
"This is not what we discussed, Marco," he said firmly.
“I know. I know. I promise you, I will finish the job as long as you give me one more week.”
Marco was good at what he was doing. He couldn’t deny that. Clearing computers, hacking different software, creating a new identity as well as making people disappear. He is also good at finding someone, especially those who are hiding. Marco is good at his job, but if he continues this way, Knight has no qualms but to end their business with each other.
Knight's gaze caught a woman busy playing with two children. Knight had no interest in children, so he didn't understand why the woman seemed to catch his attention.
Knight even preferred petite women, but he didn’t know that curvy woman were more attractive and sexy. Her curves were in all the right places. Her wide hips that made him want to hold her as he f**k her hard. Her nice t**s, and tights that he wanted to wrap around his waist.
Damn. What am I even thinking?
This is not him.
One more glanced over at the curvy woman. He couldn’t deny how captivating she was. She’s beautiful and looks innocent. There was something sexy about watching a woman take care of children.
“Who is that woman?”
“That’s my daughter – Erin Ibañez.”
Erin Ybañez…
