"I've never stopped loving you." My eyes flew open, and I stared at his face, my mouth agape. But the words wouldn't come. I looked into his eyes, as clear as two crystal-water wells. It felt like I could see right through them. My heart began to pound in my chest. In an unexpected reaction, Nick took me by the waist and pulled me close.
"We need to talk. We need to talk about what happened in the past, what made me let you go when it wasn't what I truly wanted," he explained. I shook my head.
A lump formed in my throat. When I looked at him again…
"No, Nick. Don't try to make me believe it wasn't real. You're the last person I would believe. And the past doesn't matter anymore. It's too late." I pulled away from his touch, which felt like it was burning me at that moment.
