“Are you good?”
I pressed my lips together and kept my head down. “I-I’m fine,” I said, avoiding his gaze and looking at the flowing river instead.
“Good… you should eat more,” he urged. I even felt him touching my arm, which made me flinch a bit. I bit my lip and slowly took a bite of the fruit that he gave me. I didn’t know if it was the food that I brought or if it was his own. Nevertheless, I didn’t have a choice because my stomach was rumbling already.
The deafening silence between us made the awkwardness even stronger. It didn’t help that, even though he wasn’t saying anything, I could feel his stares all over me. It was as if he was studying me or something.
Slowly, I tried to look at him and the moment our eyes met, I saw how his smile grew wider. I immediately looked away to avoid his gaze. I took a deep breath and continued to eat the fruit that I was holding. I settled my eyes on the flowing river. I was oddly in a very unfamiliar place.
I tried to remember what happened before I got here, but my memory is a bit foggy. The last thing I remembered was that I was running from something and then everything was black…
“You’re not from here…”
I was pushed back from my thoughts when I heard him speak. My lips parted a bit as I slowly looked at him.
“W-What?” I stuttered. I didn’t know, but I suddenly felt my heart beating so fast.
He just gave me a warm and reassuring smile. I don’t know but there was something about the way he looked at me. It was very different from the way that the other wolves in Riverstone looked at me. I could see…ugh never mind. It must have been my mind being clouded, huh?
“Relax…I am not gonna hurt you.” Gently, he reached for my right hand and squeezed it as if he was assuring me that everything was alright and that he would not do anything bad to me. That was what I felt at that moment. Hell, I never felt like that ever since my father died…
I sighed and looked down. “I’m sorry… I-I am just not used to people being gentle, especially if you’re not someone I am close with.”
I looked up and gave him a tight smile. The smile on his face vanished as his forehead creased. “You must have had an awful past, huh…”
He played with my fingers, which made me stare at his hands for a little while. I swallowed hard, unable to say anything as my mind oddly went blank while I was staring at what he was doing. I took a deep breath and was about to take my hand from him when he slowly caressed my cheek.
I was taken aback. My eyes widened a bit when I looked at him. My mouth parted a bit as I looked at his deep-set brown eyes. They were gentle and soft. He looked at me with those bewitching eyes that made my heart pound two times more than normal. I felt a lump in my throat that even if I wanted to say something, I couldn’t. And my heart felt like it wanted to get out of my chest already!
I blinked multiple times before I was pushed back to reality. I cleared my throat and eventually moved away from him.
“Uhmm I-I’m sorry, uhh I think I took so much of your time. Thank you… for looking after me…” I gave him a smile before avoiding his gaze,
I stood up and got my bag already. I was still a little fuzzy, but I could manage. I cannot be just here. I need to find some place to stay. Sighing, I bit my lip and looked around, trying to find a path. Damn, where the hell am I anyway?”
“Do you have somewhere to go?” I heard the man speak again. I was stunned for a bit. I could still feel his gaze at me. In the end, I pressed my lips together before looking back at him.
“Uhmm…”
“If you don’t have anywhere to go, I know a place…”
My forehead creased. I didn’t answer immediately, but in the end I sighed. “Why would you offer me that?” I asked, confused as to why he was so gentle and kind. He doesn’t even know me. And how did he even see me?
“Because you’re alone, and you have nowhere to go,” he said, smiling again. Now he was crossing his arms over his chest while looking at me intently. For the second time, I was stunned at him.
I stared at him curiously. He didn’t budge and just continued to stare at me with those menacing eyes and beaming smile. I stared at him for a moment.
“Who are you really? I mean…how did you find me? W-Where am I? What—”
“Woah, woah, woah, chill. One question at a time.” He let out a chuckle. I gasped and was even more curious about him.
“Well, will you answer my question then?” I pouted and bit my lip. He smiled even more.
“I’m Farkas…I believe I told you that earlier, but it seemed that you were still lightheaded, hmm?” I pouted even more. I heaved a sigh and slowly nodded at him. He chuckled again. “I was hunting when I saw you here. You were unconscious. From the looks of it, it seemed that you suffered a fall… you have bruises, so I treated you…”
I couldn’t help but look at myself. And there, I saw bruises and some wounds on my shoulder and legs. They were all patched up and some of them are already healing. It’s not that fast, but at least it is healing. I shook my head a bit. It’s also one of the reasons that the wolves back in Riverstone mocked me. Unlike any normal wolf, I have a slow process of healing. My wounds heal up just like humans.
“Are you okay?”
I gulped and just gave him a sad smile. “I-I’m fine…”
He nodded, but I could still feel that he was studying me by the way that he looked at me. “Hmm so, will you come with me or will you just let the rogues be with you come nightfall?” He smirked. My eyes widened. I swallowed hard as memories started flashing back in my head. I bit my lip and held onto my head.
Oh great. That was the reason why I fell off the cliff! Damn! I closed my eyes tight before looking back at Farkas.
“Are you sure I can go with you?” I said, still hesitant.
He just chuckled again. “Yeah, the offer still stands. Let’s go?”
I sighed and shook my head. I gave him a smile. “Alright. Thank you, Farkas…”
“You’re most welcome…”
“Louve… the name’s Louve.”
“Hmm. What a gorgeous name. Louve, huh. Shall we?”
He reached out for my hand. For the ninth time, he stunned me. I pressed my lips together, still confused about whether I should take his hand or not. Though in the end, I still took it. I almost even flinched when I felt bolts of electricity flowing through my body when our skin touched. My throat felt dry and my heart was raging again.
“Let’s go, Louve, time to go home…” he whispered as he aided and pulled me with him.
