Hunter\'s Street calling

731 Words
Sam was sitting in his New York office on the twentieth floor sipping on a cup of black coffee when his phone rang. “Hello?” “Sir, it's your wife calling,” said Rebecca. “Transfer the call.” A few seconds later,Sam heard a familiar, soft voice on the other end. “Sam? Why is your phone switched off?” “I am sorry Grace.I was in a meeting and I forgot to switch it on later.” “It’s okay”, said Grace, unsatisfied with the explanation. “Did you take your medicines, honey?” “I did.I remembered today.” “Good. See you for dinner then.” “Okay wifey,I will try to come back soon,” said Sam, keeping the receiver, still lost in thoughts and wondering what a caring wife he had. His thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. “Come in!” It was Robert, Sam's colleague and one of his best friends. “Hey Sammy, I am really jealous of you. I will be working here and you have been offered to go to South Africa!” Robert said while patting Sam on his shoulders. “I am not quite pleased with the offer.” “Why not? You are getting a break dude! No one will be watching you there.I agree it’s not proper South Africa you will be working at but you get your own office in a remote area. What was the name of the place? Some Hunter's street. You can work less and relax more.” Robert noticed a wave of restlessness on Sam's face when he mentioned Hunter's street but he didn’t take it seriously. “Probably too much work has taken a toll on him,” he thought. Sam still looked perplexed. “Robert, can you leave me alone for a while? I am really tired after today’s meeting and I don’t feel like talking to anyone right now.” “Sure buddy. Take care!,” said Robert while leaving. Sam leaned back on his chair and closed his eyes. He started thinking: “Why am I even supposed to go there? This is an “offer” right? I can clearly turn it down.” He picked up the phone and asked Rebecca to connect him to Mr. Parker, the office head. “Hello Sam,” a heavy voice greeted him on the other end. “Sir, I called up to say that I don’t want to go to Hunter's street. Why don’t you consider someone else?” “What’s bothering you Sam?” “Sir, it’s just that I don’t want to leave New York.I am used to this lifestyle. I can’t stay in a remote area.” “Look Sam, we are facing a huge crisis. We have to do something about it. The administrative body wants that office to be taken care of and that is the reason we have chosen the best person who can take over the responsibility, which is you, Sam. The administration is very serious about this and declining the offer might lead to severe consequences, if you remember your contract.” “But Sir...?” “It is final Sammy boy. You are leaving tomorrow. Good bye.” Mr. Parker disconnected the phone. Sam knew he had no other way out. Mr. Parker meant business and he wasn’t ready to lose his job. He checked his watch to see that it was 8 pm already. He had promised Grace that he would be back by dinner. He left the office and drove home. Grace had prepared his favourite things. She hugged him when he reached but Sam didn’t have the urge to eat. He anyhow didn’t want to disappoint Grace so he had dinner and retired to his room. When Grace went to the room after cleaning the dishes, Sam asked her, “Sweety, can you please pack my things up? I am having an urgent transfer. I have to leave tomorrow. I will call you there once I am settled.” Grace was surprised,” Urgent transfer? Where are you going?” “South Africa.” “Where in South Africa?” “Hunter's street!”
