“Damon. Damon.” I heard my father’s voice calling me, echoing like thunder in a cave that had no walls. “Father! Father, please, where are you!” I shouted into the nothing, my voice echoing so hard it felt like the darkness itself was throwing it back at me. I was running, my paws tearing across ground that was not really ground, just endless black that swallowed every step. My chest burned with every breath, my lungs full of fire and the taste of blood, and yet I could smell him, strong and sharp, the scent that had anchored me since I was a boy. My father.
