The whisperers started as soon as I set foot inside.
Students and staff alike were gossiping, there was nothing strange about that. It was the way they were looking at me that was unsettling. Like they almost seemed... I wasn't sure.
"Morning Ellie," Jeremy said, falling in step with me.
"Hi." I frowned. "Can I help you?"
"What, I can't walk with you to class?" He chuckled.
"You never have before."
His face fell as he scratched the back of his neck. "Melody didn't like me hanging around other... females. And besides, I gave you mouth-to-mouth, walking with you is hardly a stretch."
I shot him a look — but even that lost its sharpness when I saw his playful smile. Unfortunately, even that couldn't ward off all the whispers we passed.
He left Melody for her... ?
