Chapter Thirteen.

Ares's P.O.V

"Alpha Ares, it's a pleasure to have you." Jayden bows. Jayden is Alpha to one of the packs that are under us here in Alaska.

"Sorry for arriving in such short notice."

"Everyone is ready for you." On my way here I asked to meet with all the alphas to get an update on how everything is going, truth is my father did this more often than Thane and I but I guess him going MIA gave me the perfect excuse to come here.

"You have an unsatisfied look on your face." Jayden says after the meeting. He's right. "Is there something you're not happy with?"

"No." Yes. Heading back to one of the houses we have here, I call Jason.

Jason: Alpha

Ares: Something is wrong.

Jason: What do you mean?

Ares: Throughout the whole debriefing, even when I arrived, no one mentioned anything about Thane's arrival. If he was really here or even came here, that would have been the first thing Jayden would have told me.

Jason: If Alpha Thanatos isn't there then where is he?

Ares: Exactly. Jason I need you to check which jet went out the day he left, I'll speak to the pilot. In the meantime try to see if you can't get Noah to tell you anything and I'll wrap up everything here.

Jason: Yes Alpha.

Hanging up, I freshen up and try to attend the needs of the people. Where are you Thane?

"You're still the best male wolf I've ever fought." Shane says surrendering and I smirk, pulling her up. She's still one of the best wolves I've ever spared with as well but I'd never tell her that.

"Water?"

"Please." Throwing it in her direction, she catches it and says a 'thanks' under her breath as she sits down. Trying to catch mine I slump down next to her. "Something on your mind?" I raise an eyebrow.

"What gives you that impression?" She chuckles.

"We grew up together remember, I know when something's bothering you, you get this thing in between your eyebrows." She says smiling as she puts her finger there, moving it around. Chuckling I swat her hand away. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"No." She sighs.

"Thane might be the dark knight but you're just as capable." She says looking at me but I don't meet her eyes. That’s not true. "Come on, I want you to meet someone." She says getting up and offering me her hand but I don't take it and stand on my own, this makes her chuckle. Following her she takes me to the pack house and leads us to the kitchen.

"Lilly." When she calls her name a little girl pops up from under the island and they both giggle, Shane makes her way to her and hugs her. "I knew I'd find you here, what are you doing in here by yourself?" As she speaks to the little girl I take this time to look at her, her cute slightly curly blonde hair, hazel green eyes, barely visible freckles and fair skin.

"I was hungry and I couldn't find grandma anywhere." The little girl says frowning, Shane chuckles and tugs on her hand.

"It's okay sweetie, I'll make you something to eat but first, come. I want you to meet someone." The little girl happily follows then cowers behind Shane when they stand in front of me. I smirk. "Lilly, this is my good friend Ares, say hi."

"H-Hello." She whispers and I crunch down, looking at her she sees my offered hand and slowly takes it.

"Hi Lilly, it's very nice to meet you." I look at Shane.

"She looks just like you." When I say this they both blush, getting up I softly pat her head and she lets me. "She's beautiful Shane."

"Thank you. Her pack was attacked by a bunch of rogues, very few managed to get away but a lot of people were killed during that attack. Including her parents, when I found her they were about to kill her but thank the mood goddess I managed to stop them in time." She explains everything to me through mind link. Seeing the pissed off look on my face she chuckles, putting her palm of her hand on my face. "She's okay so fix that face please or you'll scare her." Looking down I see Lilly looking up at Shane and I and she smiles, I smile back. Putting up her hand she tries to reach my face so I pick her up, she softly puts her palm on my face the same way Shane did.

"Ares." She says with a smile.

"I think she likes you." Lilly's cheeks turn pink.

"I think I like her too." I say putting my forehead on hers. After spending a little more time with Shane and Lilly I get word from Jason about where Thane is. Heading back to the house I start packing.

"You're leaving?" Turning around I see Shane standing by the door.

"Yeah, there's somewhere I have to be." I hear her sigh.

"How's Amber?" I furrow my eyebrows but keep packing.

"How do you know about Amber?"

"Oh come on Ares, do you really think if you or Thane were to be with someone, especially someone who isn't your mate, that it wouldn't spread around the wolf community like wild fire?"

"I just didn't want it to reach you." She starts making her way to me.

"And why not?"

"Because it's not importa-"

"No, that's not what I'm asking you." I turn around and our eyes meet.

"Then what are you asking me?"

"It could have reached everyone else but not me? Why? Why not me Ares?" I don’t know. When looking into her longing eyes I notice that the crystal chandelier is making her ocean blue eyes sparkle. They look like an ocean of diamonds. What … these eyes, why are they so familiar to me?

7 Years Ago:

"I love you Ares."

"Shane I-" She interrupts me.

"I know what you're going to say, that we're not mates but, I don't care. I love you and I want to be with you." Looking into her teary eyes breaks my heart, I knew I was leading her on, I knew where this would go but I didn't stop, I couldn't stop. I am supposed to be the good one right but sometimes, hurting people feels so-

"No!" Moving away from Shane she tries to come closer.

"Ares what is it? What's wrong?" Her voice is both laced with worry and concern.

"Shane don't come any closer." f**k! My head hurts, as if someone is pounding it against a wall. "She's unlocking your memories! Get the hell out of here Ares!" The more Rex's voice rings inside my head the more painful it seems to get. “Stop talking.” I say through gritted teeth.

"Ares-"

"STAY THE f**k AWAY FROM ME SHANE!" I roar. Her eyes pool with tears as her lip quivers, f**k! Turning in a quick pace she runs out and I fall to my knees. "Ahh!"
