Charlie and Emily were very familiar with the 'house spirits' story. They had experienced it first hand in the early years of mine and Amelia's marriage. The four of us would spend considerable time together as Emily and Amelia had been childhood friends. They had come to the house numerous times for dinners, parties, and afternoon visits.
I still remember the very first time Charlie visited us at the house. We had all watched him expectantly, waiting to see how he would respond to the 'vibe' of the house. As soon as he entered, he paused, smiled, then gave a very deep, respectful bow, as he greeted the 'house spirits' in Mandarin.
