I felt my heart plummet. I moved to go towards the place where Evangeline supposedly was but Jessie grasped my shoulder. His look was apologetic. I looked at Jamie. She looked so sad on my behalf. Evangeline, Xavinat’s consort? I had suspected as much when I had cast the protection circle but I had not truly wanted to believe it. I waited with bated breath while the sound of hoofs against the grey rock faded. I felt sick to my stomach. A wave of nausea hit me.
