After a few more minutes with my parents they took off and then it was just Jake and I. As we began walking through the forest I looked into the sky and saw the beautiful harvest moon shining down above us. The thin tree line gave the moon a chance to let its lunar light through and it easily cascaded down through the branches, illuminating the forest floor.
When I looked over to Jake I noticed him looking back at me, grinning, or maybe it was just smiling.
"Beautiful." He murmured.
I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm okay I guess." I was half vampire so I had to be somewhat pretty right? But I didn't think I was anything special.
Jake's forehead formed a slight crease. "Er, I was talking about the moon." he said as he pointed towards the skyline of the trees.
Blushing, I looked back up to the moon for a few seconds before nodding my head in agreement. "It definitely is. I mean for seeing the moon like this for the first time its a wonderful sight to see." I frowned before pushing myself a little bit to get in front of Jake so he wouldn't see my hurt.
"Ness-" Jake called as he matched my speed instaneously. "-It's not that I don't think you aren't pretty because, well, you are. It's just that I don't want to complicate things."
I stopped in my tracks and looked at him. His deep brown eyes gazed into mine and I saw the gentleness behind them. I sighed, running my rings nervously through my curls.
"You don't think I know that. I mean look at me." I gestured to my body. "I've only been alive less then a year and I'm already a woman." I took a deep breath. "There are changes going on inside me and I don't even know what to do or what to think or even how to begin. I'm scared." I confessed.
Jakes face filled with worry as he pulled me into his arms and held me. "You don't need to be scared Renesmee. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere. Whatever you are going through I'm going to be right beside you."
For a few seconds I just stood there, my arms hanging limply at my side. My body was feeling weird, different, but in a good way. I liked the feeling I got from him, though I didn't know what it meant. I just knew I wanted more. Lifting my arms I wrapped them around him and held tightly. Then he squeezed tighter in reaction and it was like a fire lit deep in my belly. Then it was extinguished as he released his grip around me and pulled my arms from around him before putting some space between us. I could imagine the expression that held on my face. Disappointment, desperate, surprise, yearning...
"Jake" I gasped.
He shook his head. "Come on Ness we need to keep moving if we are to get back in time. I don't want to give your parents a reason to worry and we need to get you some food." Before I could object he quickly phased, shredding his clothes in the process, and then knelt down before me.
Sighing I climbed onto him and held on tightly. Then we were off. I watched as the scenery around us passed in a great big blur. Here and there enough moonlight allowed for the blurs to be seen clearly in my vision, but only for a second. Just around morning we had passed through the Canadian border. It was crazy how fast he could run without needing to stop. Though I knew when we got home he would surely crash.
As we came through to Forks we slowed down a bit. Soon we were in the woods near my families home and shortly after we were over the river that ran right beside the house. When I climbed off Jake I sank to the ground, my knees weak, the lack of sleep over the past couple days had taken a great toll on me.
"Renesmee sweetie lets get you inside so you can eat and then go to bed." My father said as he lifted me into his arms.
"Daddy I'm not tired." I said yawning through half my sentence.
"You are definitely convincing." He chuckled as we entered through the front door.
It was so hard to keep my eyes open because of how heavy they felt. The best I could do was make sure I didn't fall asleep. Then I heard my uncle.
"Okay, I can't pretend like it doesn't bother me anymore. How in the hell did she get so big?" He asked. "I mean come on Edward your daughter left looking like a little girl and returned looking like a woman."
"Emmett, believe me I wonder the same thing I just have other important things on the front of my mind at this moment. One of them is feeing my daughter and the other is making sure she gets to sleep." My father replied.
"Dad, I'm not a baby I can take care of myself." I slurred.
Then I was laid on something comfortable. Without opening my eyes I sniffed before running my fingers gently along the surface. It felt like silk and smelled of several different scents that I knew belonged to my family members. This had to be the couch in the family room that Esme had bought a new silk cover for just before we left. Sure enough when I allowed my eyes to open just a fraction my guess was confirmed. Closing my eyes I smiled smugly to myself at my correction assesment.
"Here you go." I heard my aunt Alice say as she lifted me into a sitting position before placing something into my hand. "It's blood."
It took a ton of strength to bring the cup to meet my lips and then after that I just drank. It was so good. Replenishing, refreshing, satisfying, quenching. When I had finished drinking I handed the cup back to Alice who, by the sound of it, placed it on the end table.
"Where's my mom and dad?" I asked as I laid back down.
Alice took a seat on the floor beside the couch and began running her fingers through my hair. "Talking with Carlisle about you." She said simply. "They want to know why you are the way you are." She added before I could ask her why.
"It's because I drowned at the island." I managed to get out before I crashed completely.
Running through the meadow my mother and father once shared I looked over my shoulder. Right behind me trying to keep up was Jacob in his human form. The sun gave his natural bronze skin a alluring shine to it. It was beautiful. Then he was at my side. Slowly his fingers slipped between mine before he pulled me against him.
"You are beautiful Mrs. Black." He said to me.
Smiling I looked down at our entwined hands and saw on our left hand, fourth finger, there were matching rings. I looked back up at him and he brought his lips to mine. For several seconds we stayed connected through our kiss before a flutter in my stomach grabbed my attention. Reaching my hand instinctively to my abdomen my fingers grazed across a small bump.
"Oh." I sighed as I looked down in shock.
Then Jake was on his knees, his hands were to my stomach in seconds.
"Seems like she is awake." He chuckled before pressing his lips to my stomach.
"It's a girl?" I asked him slightly confused.
Jake looked up at me, his smile big and bright. "I have no idea I just imagine it being a girl. Your hair, your eyes, your face..." he trailed off.
Then suddenly all the sunshine disappeared and dark clouds rolled in. All around me the rain began to fall and the wind began to blow. Then my stomach began to grow and grow.
"It's going to kill her take it out!" I heard Jakes voice shout from somewhere though I couldn't see him from the constant downpour.
Even though the baby inside me was hurting me I wanted to protect it with everything I had. But still my stomach continued to grow and grow and grow. It was too big now and looked like a blimp. I could no longer see anything, not even the rain that fell around me because my stomach blocked my face.
Then I screamed as it felt like I was being ripped open from the inside out. The pain was excruciating. Unbearable. I wanted it to end.
"Renesmee!" I heard my mothers voice call.
Where was she? I could hear her but I could see her. I reached my arms out to try and find her but I couldn't make contact.
"RENESMEE!"
I opened my eyes and looked around. Blinking a few times the room came into focus though my vision was slightly obscurred from something in my eyes. Bringing my hand up I wiped my eyes and found that what had obscurred my vision was tears.
Then I remembered my dreamed. I dropped my hands quickly to my stomach and was relieved when it was flat. I rose my left hand up and then sighed in relief as it had no ring. After a few seconds of adjusting to the fact that it was just a nightmare I looked up and made eye contact with my mother and then my father.
Immeadiately I blushed because I knew that atleast my father had seen my nightmare. Then Jake came across the room and sat down beside me. Remember the nightmare I reacted by scooting over a few inches.
"What is wrong Nessie?" He asked.
I looked up at him, still blushing. "Nightmare." I murmered before looking back at down at my hands.
By now everyone except my parents and Jake had left the room to give us some privacy. Jake moved to place his hand on my shoulder comfortingly and I shrugged away from it.
"Was it about me? Did I hurt you in the nightmare Nessie?" He asked worridly. "Because I'd never do that. I'd never ever, ever hurt you."
I shook my head quickly, my curls bouncing around my head. "No, it was something else." I replied before looking up at my father.
"Renesmee, its okay you can tell him." My father said encouragingly.
I nodded my head and then looked at Jacob. "I had a dream we were married and I was having a baby, your baby. Only it was like me when I was inside my mother." I admitted.
Jakes arms were quickly around me. "It was just a dream Ness. Anyways you are too young to be thinking like that you are just a child."
"I'm an adult." I replied feebly.
"You are still a child." Jake replied. "I mean I still see you that way so you don't have to worry about weddings or babies or dating or kissing or anything like that because-"
Suddenly my mind grew bitter and I felt my fists clench before I rose to my feet quickly. Before I could understand my reaction I found myself yelling.
"I'M AN ADULT, AN ADULT! SO STOP TREATING ME LIKE A CHILD JACOB!" I said before running out of the room.
I ran through the house and to the stairs that led to my dads old bedroom that I used whenever I was here in the main house. When I sat down on the large bed I forced myself to take a deep breath and relax.
Then my mother was at my side. "Renesmee." she said
"Mom I didn't mean to yell I didn't even know I was going to until it happened." I defended.
My mothers arm was around me and then my head was resting on her shoulder. "Its hard to get used to this. You being an adult. Just 7 months ago you were in my tummy, then my arms, now you are." she trailed off, probably not knowing what to say next.
"Try actually living it mom." I joked, trying to make conversation and kill the awkward silence. "I mean I went from being in your stomach to looking like I'm 17 in 7 months. I even died, was born again, traveled on a vampires back from Brazil to Alaska, watched Jake die, watched half my family and friends die, faced the Volturi, went back and time and-" I froze mid sentence as I noticed the stressed look on my mothers face.
"What do you mean you died?" She asked me.
I wrung my hands together nervously. "When you and dad left me I tried to swim after you and I grew to tired. I died and when I woke up I was like this." I responded. "I'm sorry." I added.
I mother wrapped her arms around me and held me. "Don't ever do that again." she said to me.
After sitting in silence for a few moments she released me.
"We were lucky to have Zelda mom. If it wasn't for her Rosalie, Jasper, Jacob and Jennifer would be dead." Then it hit me. Where was Jennifer. "Mom-"
"Jennifer went with Rhiannon, Zelda and Samara." She said answering my next question.
I frowned. I hadn't really had much time to spend with my sister and then she was gone, in a new family. Well atleast she would be taken care of.
"Mom, about Jake." I took a deep breath. "He imprinted on me so at some point we will be like you and dad right?" My mother slowly nodded her head. "When do you think he will stop seeing me as a child?"
My mother shrugged her shoulders before getting to her feet. "He has only been around you for a day so he is still getting used to the adult you. It can be anywhere from the next hour to a year or several years." My mother placed her hands on her hips. "Regardless you are not allowed to date until your father and I say so. Understand?" The expression on my mothers face was severe. She was serious.
Sighing I slightly rolled my eyes. "Yes mother."
Then she smiled. "That's my girl. Now that we have had that talk you can go take a shower and get dressed. We are having dinner with Charlie."
My eyes grew wide. "Really!" I squeeled happily.
My mother chuckled. "Yes Renesmee. Now hurry up we have forty-five minutes to be out the door. Your clothes are in the closet, bra and underwear in the drawer." She said before shutting the door and heading downstairs.
It took all of 15 minutes to make sure my body was perfectly cleaned and my long curly hair was shampood, conditioned and brushed free of the tangles that had accumilated here and there over the past week. Then I was in my undergarmets - which fit perfectly thanks to aunt Alice - and looking for a outfit in my closet. When I had finished dressing I slicked back my hair into ponytail and then headed downstairs.
"I knew you'd like it!" Alice beamed as she passed me at the bottom of the stairs.
I was wearing dark skinny jeans, a royal blue tshirt and a white leather jacket and pink converse. All the outfits and shoes were set together in sets inside the closet so I didn't have to mix and match items. All of the matching was done by Alice.
"I've always liked what you dressed me in since I was little Alice."
"Go figure." Emmett teased as he headed into the tv room. In the next second I heard the television come to life and then the voices of sports announcers filled the room.
"You look just like your mother." My father said as he entered the room and brought me into a hug.
"Where is mom?" I asked when I didn't smell her scent in the house.
"Car, ready?" He asked.
Without responding I ran straight for the door, throwing it open before heading right to the car. I quickly got into the back of my dads volvo and buckled up. He soon joined us and then we were on our way.
I stared out the window and watched as we drove through town. Here and there I would catch glimpses of couples holding hands, kissing or hugging. As we were nearing the turn off for Charlie's house I saw a woman with a round stomach, holding a small childs hand.
Then we were pulling up to his house. Before I could get out of the car Charlie was crossing the front yard. Just like every time I was coming over, he was wearing a big grin under his mustache.
"Where is my grandbaby?" He said.
My mother and father who were already out of the car turned to look at me. Sighing I opened up the car door and then got out. When I smiled at him his smile disappeared. I looked at my mother and father and then back to my grandfather.
"Charlie, its me. Renesmee." I said, trying to sound cheerful despite his reaction to seeing me.
With my ears I was able to hear his heart beat speed up tremendously. Then he fainted. Before he could hit the ground my father had caught him. My mother who was still in shock from his reaction had just thawed out and was on her knees beside him.
