Cal watched her go. Watched his heart walking out the door.
She waved, and was gone.
He went back and finished the latest sandwich order and delivered it to his father.
Something was itching. Something he didn’t like.
“Dad, I’ll be back in a minute.”
“Don’t have time for that right now, Junior.” It was a tease, an actual tease from his dad.
“She’s just gone out to help her mom.”
“Oh. Okay. Did you tell her to say hello for me? Haven’t had as much time as I’d like to pay attention to Gina this week.”
Cal clapped his hand on his dad’s shoulder in reassurance. After all, they both lived here and had all the time in the world. Natalya lived three hours away.
“Gonna take your damned minute anytime soon?”
“Oh, right,” and Cal raced up the stairs to the apartment. He turned sharply for
