Greg swore as he neared the diner. He was running late to pick up Lara, and though she’d told him not to worry on the phone, he didn’t like that he was letting her down. One of the students in his last training session had received a nasty punch to the face, resulting in a broken nose. One of the guy’s friends— the one who had in fact thrown the punch— had taken him down to the hospital to get looked at, but the interruption had cost Greg a few minutes, making the class run late. To make matters worse, instead of leaving straight afterward like he should have, he’d popped in to see his dad, which would have been fine except that there had been an accident near the Council building, hence why he was running over half an hour late instead of just a few minutes.
