Morris POV
I check my phone, and it's quarter to five. I shut down my computer and reach for my briefcase when I remember it's in the f**king garbage because of that crazy b**tch. I can't believe she put her panties in my bag. The camera is supposed to be here first thing tomorrow. It looks like a speaker, so no one will suspect the office is under surveillance. I slide my phone into my pocket and grab my computer.
Shutting the lights off and locking my office door before I make my way to the elevator. The floor is pretty empty because most people work eight to four. When I reach the lobby, John the night guard is standing near the door that leads to the parking garage. "Mr. McNair, you're out early tonight." It's sad that he's right. "Yep, I plan on getting home on time going forward."
"Good for you sir. I would hate to see you turn into your father." I'm not sure in what way he means because I know he was with Elise the night she found Loreli with me in my office. "You can rest assured that I won't become him in any way." "That's good sir. You have a beautiful wife and daughter. They are more important than any job," he says.
"You sound like you speak from experience John." He chuckles and nods. "Let's just say I wasn't always a security guard. It's a hard lesson to learn if you let a job become more important than your wife and child. I'm glad that you see it before its too late sir. You have a good night, sir." "You too, John."
I push through the door and make my way to my car. A feeling of unease rolls through me and I look around. I don't see anything, but I still can't shake the feeling. When I reach my car, I push the unlock button. That's the last thing I remember before I wake up in a room full of people. It's chaos as a man that I assume is a doctor barks orders to everyone around him.
He must notice I'm awake because he starts shining a light in my eyes. "Where the f**k am I?" "Mr. McNair, you were attacked. You are in the emergency room of Regional Hospital." I try to sit up, and he pushes me back down. "Sir, you have a head injury. I need you to lie still. We need to make sure you don't have any other injuries."
"I'm fine, I need to get home. My wife's waiting for me for dinner," I say as I try to sit up again. "Sir, I'm sure your wife will understand that you're late because you were attacked. Now let the nurses do their jobs. We are taking you for a CT scan to make sure you don't have any bleeds" he says. "Is that really necessary?"
"Sir, we don't do anything that isn't necessary. Now I need you to let us do our jobs. We will let your wife know that you're here." F**k, the new phone. I didn't have Daniel put her new number in my phone. She has mine but I don't have hers. "You need to have someone call my assistant Daniel to get her number." I swear he rolls his eyes at me as they wheel me out of the room.
I'm not sure how much time has passed, but my anger is rising by the minute. Daniel didn't answer, and I have no way to get a hold of my wife. I'm ready to sign myself out when the door to my room opens. Seeing my wife crying makes me damn near jump off the bed. Her apologizing is not what I was expecting. She doesn't owe me an apology. It was my fault for making her think she wasn't important. For being late all the time.
I still can't believe someone attacked me. I'm just about to ask Elise to get my phone, so I can call the building to check the surveillance in the garage when there is another knock on the door. Two officers step inside. "Mr. McNair, we need to ask you some questions about the attack. Your girlfriend couldn't give us any details." My body stiffens because the question is so unexpected.
My heart starts to pound against my chest. Elise is going to leave me again. I push those thoughts away and focus on the officers. "I'm not sure who the hell you talked to, but it wasn't my girlfriend. I have no girlfriend. I have a wife who is sitting beside me." Something passes between the two officers before he looks back at me. "My apologies, sir, I must have been confused."
"No, I don't think you were. I think someone said they were my girlfriend, and now you think I'm trying to cover up some kind of affair because my wife is sitting here. Let me make this perfectly clear. I have not touched or looked at another woman since I met my wife. So I would like to know exactly who told you she was my girlfriend."
The officer looks taken back by my outburst, but I don't give a f**k. He takes a tablet from his pocket. "The woman at the scene's name was Loreli Patton. She is the one that called 911. She seemed pretty upset about you being injured when we arrived on the scene. She even rode in the ambulance with you."
What the f**k? She rode in the ambulance. This time I feel Elise stiffen next to me. I expect her to pull her hand from mine, so I'm grateful when she doesn't. I focus my attention back on the officers trying to keep my anger in check. "She is an employee in my building, nothing more. As far as what happened, the only thing I can tell you is that I was leaving at five. I remember walking across the parking lot and unlocking my car door."
"I can't remember anything after that. I do remember feeling uneasy as I made my way to my car, but I didn't see anyone around me." "So, Ms. Patton didn't leave the building with you" he says. I resist the urge to scream. "No, I was alone when I left. John the nightguard watched me walk out alone. As soon as I get my phone, I'll be calling my office security to get video of the parking garage."
"Will need to see that footage when its available" he says. "Fine, now if you officers don't mind, I have a wicked headache and would like to spend some time with my wife." "Of course, we will be in touch, Mr. McNair." As soon as the door closes, I look over at my beautiful wife, her expression unreadable. "Elise" I start to say, but another knock interrupts me.
I expect to see the doctor or another nurse walk in. What I don't expect is to see f**king Loreli. She is smiling until her eyes land on Elise. Why the f**k is she here? She schools her expression quickly before her gaze returns to me. She moves closer to the side of my bed. "I'm so glad you're alright Morris. I was so scared when I saw you laying on the ground bleeding," she says.
"Did you tell the police that you're my girlfriend?" "What, of course not? Why would I ever say such a thing? I am your employee" she says, before turning toward my wife. "There is nothing between us, I assure you, Elise. I would never want to cause problems between you and Morris," she says to my wife.
"Let me make something perfectly clear, Loreli. I am well aware you are nothing to my husband. In fact, you're not even his assistant any more last time I checked. Now, as grateful as I am that you called for help when my husband needed it, you being here really isn't appropriate since you are only an employee. You have a good night" Elise says effectively dismissing Loreli.
I'm not sure why Loreli looks at me before she turns to leave my room, but if she thought I was going to contradict my beautiful wife she is sadly mistaken. Once the door clicks behind her, I practically pull Elise into the bed. I thread my fingers in the hair at the nape of her neck and kiss my wife. I kiss her like a man who is having his first drink after a drought. When she moans, I can feel myself start to harden.
A throat-clearing interrupts the kiss and I groan. She pulls back and her cheeks are pink. "Mr. McNair, I'm here to take you to your room upstairs for the night. I'm sorry Mrs. McNair but you'll have to leave now." "No, my wife is going with me." "Sir, that is against hospital policy" she says. "Elise, hand me my phone please." "Morris" she starts to say, but hands me the phone.
Five minutes later the doctor from earlier steps into the room where I refuse to let the nurse take me upstairs. "Joan, Mrs. McNair, is allowed to accompany her husband upstairs." "Doctor, the policy" she starts to say, but he cuts her off. "The COO just called so if you want to keep your job just listen." She turns back to me and I want to give her a smug smile, but I don't. I know she is only doing her job.
Ten minutes later I'm in a private room. "You probably got that poor nurse in trouble," Elise says and I smile. "No, I made sure to tell Cliff she was doing her job well. Hell she might even get a raise. Now come over here and let me hold you. After the bulls*t tonight I need to hold my wife." I say a silent prayer of thanks when she doesn't argue and slides in next to me. It doesn't take long for my eyelids to start to feel heavy. "I love you, Elise." "I love you, Morris." For the first time since this cluster*ck started, I feel at peace as the darkness surrounds me.
