"Come on, let’s go get some drinks.” Trevor looked at me with a puzzled expression,
“You're going to drink?” I nodded with a smile,
“Yeah, punch.” I laughed and dragged him to the safety of the Sanchez fenced-in yard.
“Hola mija.” Raul, Ellie’s father, comes over to give us all a tight squeeze. He was always a friendly man. Ever since Gigi helped them, we have become family. “Gigi, come whiskey is ready vámonos.” He puts an arm around her shoulders, leading her to the bar. She nods, following with a laugh. We followed slower and took in the amazing decoration in their backyard, very bright and colorful. It was understandable why they started the parties later in the day.
“Sammy!” A bouncing little Ellie with bright blue hair and dark burgundy lipstick, her skull dress popped out of the crowd. I smiled as Vicki Ellie's little sister jumped into my arms. She has been in New York at an art school on a scholarship for the last year.
“I love your hair.” I grinned at her. She unglued herself and twirled.
“Thank you, and you look pretty. I love the dress,” She looked up and down, “Ellie has good taste.” She grins. I nod, she is a special girl. She has a connection with spirits, and she talks to them, and they talk back like friends. “A little birdy told me that you have a unique relationship with a unique somebody.” She wiggles her eyebrows at me and Trevor. I smiled and looked at him.
“The pinkish-blue is quite strange on you. You usually sport a gray aura.” She says to him, looking at him. I leaned over to her,
"You see it too?" She nods,
"Not too many seers have that strong of a connection to see the auras around others, much less begins like him." I hm in amusement.
"You are a very strong seer." Trevor looked at us blinking in surprise,
“When have you been able to see that much?” He asked, “Your powers are getting stronger.” He smiled. She shrugs with a cheeky smile then twirls around waving at us,
“I’ll see you two around the party.” I laughed, pulling us towards the nonalcoholic drinks. I was always amazed by the party the Sanchez family threw. Before, the protection spells were only as strong as the humans that made them. Trevor was never around during the parties, so I never stayed long enough to enjoy being with others.
“This place looks amazing.” I took in a breath of fresh air. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt this safe around this many people every,” I leaned my head on his shoulder as we rested on the side of the house, “thank you.” I breathed quietly.
“Your welcome love.” He kissed my head, “I wanted you to have a stress-free and fun time.”
For hours, we danced, ate, and drank punch. It was so freeing to have so much fun without seeing dead people that, for those few hours, I felt like a normal human being. I smiled at Trevor as he spun me around while we danced to the music, but I stopped mid-step as I glanced up to the sky as the temperature in the air started to drop, and saw dozens of ghosts surrounding the barrier. Then I saw him at the very top of the dome glaring down at me, no not me. I looked at Trevor then back up at the translucent being. He was glaring at Trevor. That’s when a blood-curdling scream came from the front porch. I wanted to look, to move, to run, but the icy blue stare immobilized me to my spot. I don’t think I could even breathe. He opens his mouth and says my name, his eyes never leaving my demons. I heard it clear and loud, then another scream came out from the inside of the house. A hand grabs my arm and I scream. It sounds far as if it didn’t come from me, but I feel it as it rumbles through my chest and out of my throat. Another hand takes my other arm and the person shakes me hard, making my head fling back and forth. The person's nails dug deep. I could feel blood down my arm, but it was a distant feeling. Then a hard whack rang out so loud I finally realized that someone had slapped me. I blink as I slowly feel the sting of the hard whack burn on my cheek. I look down at the worried Ellie,
“Sammy?” She says slowly in a low but hard tone, checking to see if I was back. I nod,
“Ye..ah, I’…m fine.” I breathed out, not believing the words that brushed my lips.
“Come on, the guests are starting to leave. We should head inside, Vicki is… is well she is inside.” My heart feels like a hand has grasped it in a tight grip.
“Is she okay?” She shrugs,
“We think so but Gigi is looking at her right now.” We walk in slowly as Ellie reassures those that are leaving and wishing them a safe travel home, many of them were staring at me from the corner of their eyes I could feel it. I take a few deep breaths,
“Where’s Trevor?” I asked, looking around, taking my time to search over the descending crowd.
“He disappeared when Vicki had screamed the first time.”
“Do we know what happened?”
“No, not yet.” She huffs, crossing her arms. I looked back at the sky. The ghosts were still there, but the pale man was gone. A feeling of dread hits my stomach. I knew he was fighting the monsters, but I couldn't see them or hear them.
"I am going to go get a drink of water." I murmured, walking to the kitchen. I could hear my grandmother say that Vicky was alright, just shocked by the number of ghosts that appeared. My worry for the youngest of the Sanchez siblings subsides, and it focuses on Trevor. I go to the kitchen. I got a cup then turned on the sink. I take out the pendent and think back to when I was at the mall. I take in a large amount of air and slowly let it out. The water started to slow to a stop, the surrounding air stilled and that is when I heard grunts and clanks of metal against one another. I looked around but I saw nothing. I made my way outside and saw the two in the sky fighting one another. They would flash in and out of the sky in the liquid puddles. There were times when the pale men would get stuck in the portal, giving Trevor the opportunity to attack. When I thought the fight was almost over, I see a speck of black fall at the back of the yard. It lands in a solid thud. I race forward trying my best to remember all the protection and defense chants and spells speaking the world loud and commanding. I push the attack chant out shooting phantom blades all around me as I reach his side. I hear a grunt and slosh as one of the blades strick and pierced through the pale man. Wounded severely he vanished.
