Chapter 8

*Victor’s POV*  My father poured himself a drink while I sat in front of his desk. We arrived at the pack house, and we’re currently in his office. My father has been unusually quiet, which is strange for someone who is very social with his pack members and humans alike. I can’t figure out if he hates humans, or likes them anymore. The rules he imposes on us wolves, but how he interacts with them, what the hell is going on in that head of his?  My father stared out of his window, drink in his hand. “Do you know the history of werewolves’ son?” my father suddenly questioned. “Moon Goddess created us during war to end the war between humans and supernatural?” I responded, more in question. My father sighed, muttering something about changing the curriculum.  “Not exactly…yes, but still not quite” my father continued, turning around and sitting on his chair, sipping his drink. “You see, the Moon Goddess created a powerful wolf, one that when the full Moon adorned the night, would tap into their powers, and shift from human into a monster” my father continued. “This particular wolf did not fully transform, rather, it would stand on two legs like a human, adorned in fur, a half shifted wolf far more powerful than a fully shifted one”  “Lycans…” I answered in surprise. My father nodded. “Lycans are the first supernatural created by the Goddess to combat darkness all those centuries ago. The first Lycan in existence was named William” I knew that much, but lycan history was never really touched upon during my studies…I wonder why.  “You see, Lycans could only shift during a fully Moon, unlike us. And their full shift, is similar to our half shifts, yet they are more powerful than us. They were created to end lives, end wars, and were more primal than a werewolf. When transformed, the human mind normally lost the war with the lycan mind, as the two could never coexist like our wolves do with us” he continued to explain.  “So eventually, Lycans would lose rationality, becoming beasts without distinguishing friend or foe” I leaned back on my chair listening intently. What did this have to do with the Hayes and Celina is beyond me, but I’ll humor him for now.  “A few lycans became so powerful they could shift, even without a full moon, so the Goddess started pairing them with humans, making their mates weaker” I frowned at this. Why would she pair a killing machine with its prey? My father looked at my expression and chuckled.  “By mating with a human, the lycan genes would begin to dilute…eventually one of those mates brought the rise of us werewolves.” My father concluded. “So she managed to control the primitive aspect of wolves by combining more human genes into a lycan one…and creating us in the process, a more controlled body that coexists with the wolf” I added. My father nodded, downing his drink.  "These werewolves were the perfect balance between both species. However, Lycans began to lose all rationality, and therefore hunters were also created in the process. Hunters would kidnap the offspring of Lycans, experimenting with them until discovering our weaknesses. That is how they came about with silver and wolfsbane, and successfully ended an entire race, making Lycnas extinct. They tried to wage wars against werewolves, but thankfully a mutual agreement was made” he looked at me, and I realized just how exhausted my father was.  “We are to make sure any Lycan descendants, whether human or werewolf, will not mate with another werewolf and therefore give rise to Lycans again” I felt as if I were punched in the gut for some reason. Is that why my father had all these rules? To protect both species from a potential rebirth of Lycans?  “But…what does all this have to do with the Hayes?” I asked after a few minutes of silence. I saw the flash of emotions on my father’s eyes for a moment. “Not many know of this, but the Hayes, your mother and myself all grew up together, in a similar fashion as you, Amelia and Celina” my father spoke. That explained their familiarity, and how my father allowed them to speak to him in such a fashion.  “We were all inseparable, and none of us knew the history, or their lineage.” I saw my father get lost in his own thoughts, his expression of longing and pain. “Oh Goddess” I stood up, my eyes wide as it broke my father’s trance. It all made sense now….  “She was your mate” I hissed. My father’s jaw clenched before he closed his eyes, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Coincidentally, Elizabeth was my mate, as Richard was your mothers” he confirmed. I felt I was going to throw up with the revelation, but I knew there was more to the story. I sat down, drawing shaky breathes as my father stared at me intently.  “Elizabeth and Richard are direct descendants of Lycans. Their genes are the purest of them all. If we had continued with the mating and marking process, there would be a very high chance it would’ve changed them into Lycans, and therefore start a countdown before they lost their humanity and met their ultimate demise” This was too much to take in. “And best case scenario?” I questioned, my voice betraying how I was feeling.  “They would’ve become werewolves, but their offspring would’ve become one hundred percent lycan” my father answered. “So either kill the parents, or kill the offspring” I concluded. My father nodded and I saw how much both my parents sacrificed for the greater good. The cruelty behind the scenes between the mating of human and werewolves now made perfect sense. He had to act as the villain to protect everyone.  “But why would they end up married to each other? Wouldn’t that have been a bad idea?” I asked confused. My father snorted before leaning against his chair. “Their parents didn’t approve either, the fear of their child being born a werewolf or Lycan outweighing everything. However, after we properly rejected our respective mates, your mother became my second chance mate, and I feel even though they were humans, they felt the pull towards one another. I doubt anything would’ve kept them apart for a long time” just then a knock interrupted our conversation, my father allowing whomever was behind the door to enter.  Mr. and Mrs. Hayes entered the office, a look of concern on their faces. I quickly stood up, worried something happened to Celina. “Is she okay?” I questioned. Mrs. Hayes looked at me for a moment, smiling slightly. “She’s resting. She would like to see you and Amelia soon though” I nodded in understanding, looking between the adults.  “Marcus…we have to talk” Richard Hayes spoke up. “It’s fine…I was getting my son caught up with our affairs. He knows…as the future Alpha, he needs to understand what is happening behind the scenes.” My father spoke. I saw Mr. and Mrs. Hayes visibly relax, smiling genuinely at me.  “Finally…now it’ll be easier to protect Celina if you’re around” Elizabeth Hayes spoke out. I’m not sure how true that would be if they realized I was her mate, and a werewolf at that. No doubt I would be forced to reject her. The Hayes took a seat before my father and I moved to the couch on the corner of the office.  “Something is going on Marcus” Elizabeth began, fidgeting with her fingers. “What’s going on Beth?” Elizabeth looked at Richard, and the two looked at my father. “She can smell the rogue’s scent” my father’s eyes widen as he stood up.  “How is that possible? She was human when we ran our tests last time” my father responded in alarm. “I don’t know Marcus…but she distinctly remember smelling the rogue that attacked her. What…What if she found her mate?” Elizabeth said fearfully. I paled as they spoke, grateful I was in a corner were they wouldn’t see my expression.  “How would finding her mate change anything?” I asked composed. Good, my voice didn’t show panic, only curiosity. Richard looked at me in understanding. “If she’s around her mate, instincts begin to take over. Any contact with her mate, whether emotional, physical, or err…intimately, may begin the transition” her father explained. Well for starters in the intimate department that’s a definite no. Did I do anything….shit….shit…shit I licked her when I tackled her!  “So now what?” I asked as I stood up, startling my father at my sudden urgency. “We have to find her mate and have him or her reject Celina now. If the bond isn’t broken, the lycan genes within her will activate and it will only be a matter a time before she fully transitions into a werewolf, or a lycan” I swallowed hard, looking between her parents and my father.  “How much time do we have?” I asked worried. “Until the next full moon” my father responded, eyeing me carefully. “So that’s three days…” I muttered. My father narrowed his eyes at me, and I ran a hand through my hair.  “Okay…so I’ll try to get clues on who her mate could potentially be, and have them reject her before the full moon, right?” The Hayes nodded quickly, holding hands worried. “If she is rejected before the full moon, it should break the bond and force the lycan genes back into a dormant state. It’s a painful process, and I’m worried about her wellbeing after the rejection, but it’s our only option right now” Richard spoke, his voice laced with sadness.  How did these two couples managed to withstand rejection? And they are still friends to this day? The Hayes and my parents are truly stronger than I thought.
