*Victor’s POV*
My wolf was howling in anguish as Celina stormed off. My Celina…so much pain in her eyes. I clenched my fists as Amelia sighed, leaning against her locker. “We f****d up royally didn’t we” she commented. “We?” I questioned as I looked at her. She narrowed her eyes at me with a ‘don’t you dare’ look.
“Yes we…I warned you about cutting her off but you didn’t listen to me. I know I f****d up rejecting Tommy, but it was for his safety” my sister looked at me and I saw the pain in her expression as well. Did she really like Tommy that much?
“Why did you reject him?” I asked curiously. Amelia blinked back her tears, hugging her books closely. “Father may be nice to the humans…but you know how he is when wolves are mated to humans…I couldn’t let him target Tommy’s family and forced them to move because he’s my mate” I took a deep breath, nodding in understanding. But how the f**k was I going to survive after finding out Celina of all people is my mate?
Our parents have a good relationship with her parents, but how far can that relationship go when we’re mates? Would my dad force them out of the pack grounds if he finds out? Would Celina become a target? I can’t let that happen to her. I have to protect her, but will rejecting her protect her in the long run?
“Are you going to do it too?" Mel questioned. I didn’t want to, but as I saw her walk away with Tommy outside, I knew I really didn’t have a choice. “Vic…why did you ignore her this past year?” my sister continued. I growled frustrated, running a hand through my hair. “Not now Mel” I warned. She growled and pushed her hand against my chest. “I may have lost my best friend Vic so now is a perfectly good time to come clean” she warned me. I sighed deflated, leaning against the lockers.
“Dad ordered me not to” I muttered. “What?” she gasped. I looked at her, her expression of surprise. “I made the mistake of asking about her when I called dad the first week I was at training. He used his Alpha command and ordered me not to contact her or any other human while in training” Mel growled, slamming her fist against her locker frustrated.
“Why is he like this? What did the humans ever do to him? Why is he so nice to them, but won’t let us mingle?” I shoved my hand in my pockets, wondering the same thing. “I have to reject her Mel” I spoke. She looked at me sadly, placing her hand on my shoulder. “Do you really want to make the same mistake I did?” she asked me softly.
“I can’t put her in danger Mel…she’s my mate. This past year without her…it was torture. I couldn’t get her out of my head. Then seeing her today and inhaling her scent, I knew she was my mate, and I knew that if dad finds out…she could get hurt” I felt my chest constrict at the thought of something bad happening to Celina. Maybe she should find someone else. She doesn’t even know she’s my mate…maybe it’s for the best she doesn’t find out yet.
“Vic…just hold off on that” Mel spoke. I looked at her confused. “Don’t tell her yet…but let’s see how it plays out. Maybe once you become the Alpha, humans and wolves can fully coexist. So wait until graduation before you reject her” Amelia had a point. If I became the Alpha, I could nullify all these extreme rules my father imposed on the pack. But would I be able to survive a whole year without marking or mating with her? Would she be able to move on this year and crush my soul?
*Celina’s POV*
Tommy and I made it to Lou’s ice cream shop, ordered our cones and were currently sitting on one of the outdoor patio chairs they had set up for the warm weather. I sat on the patio table, swinging my legs freely as I licked the dulce leche ice cream with extra caramel sauce. Hey no judgments on my sugary addiction!
Tommy sat on one of the chairs, eating a rocky road cone. “Did you accept it?” I asked him curiously. He sighed, chomping on the tip of the ice cream, causing me to shiver from the cold contact. How do people just eat ice cream and not feel the freezing pain and tingly sensation on their teeth? Am I the only weird one?
“I mean does it matter?” Tommy questioned, looking out towards a nearby park. “I’m human, she’s a wolf, and it doesn’t matter if I accept her rejection or refuse it” he continued. “Are you serious?” I asked surprised. He turned to me, looking at me confused. “What?” he asked confused.
I can’t believe this guy…”Tommy…you have to either accept it or reject it on your end in order for the bond to be fully broken. Right now, you guys are still bound as you never said the formal rejection words” I tried to explain. “But…she didn’t even let me talk” Tommy tried to argue as he stood up.
“Explain what exactly happened” I asked him, looking at him concerned. He sighed again, running a hand through his hair. “We locked eyes, and I heard her whisper mate. Her face paled when she looked over her shoulder, darted towards me, and said the rejection before running off…leaving me there stunned and hurt” I frowned at his explanation. Amelia isn’t like that at all. We all grew up together, and she’s usually the sensitive one always pushing for the mate bond. Why would she break it off, but not even wait for the full rejection?
“It doesn’t make sense” I muttered. Tommy rolled his eyes as he sat back down. “Does it matter?” he questioned again. I glared at him as I jumped off the table. “It sure does matter. She didn’t give you an option to reject or accept, which is strange in itself. She rushed the rejection and ran off…I know Mel…she’s all for the mate bond, so this is not her at all” I reasoned.
“Do you really know her?” Tommy questioned me. “What?” Tommy raised an eyebrow at my question. “She kept our bond a secret from you and the rejection…do you really know her as well as you say you do? When she’s been keeping secrets from you this whole time?” I remained quiet, pursing my lips together. He had a point there, and as much as I hated him for bringing said point, he was right too. How well did I know my two best friends?
Vic disappeared for the year, and never bothered answering my calls or texts. Mel would always make an excuse, but I feel even she didn’t know why Vic blew me off. Hell, I don’t even know why it hurts so much that Vic would ignore me, more than Mel’s secrecy. I sighed, no longer interested in my ice cream. Are we so inferior that wolves will always look down on us? Well, I guess the good thing is that I’m not mated to a wolf, at least that I know of. So hopefully I can avoid Tommy’s fate and only deal with normal heartbreaks instead of bonds.
“Tommy…if you had a chance, would you accept her rejection?” I finally asked, bringing my gaze towards his. He looked at me, swallowing painfully before changing his gaze again. “I’ve had a crush on her since we were kids. When I heard her whisper that single word, I felt as if everything would be right in the world, and I was going to get that happy ending ya know?” I looked at him sympathetically, realizing just how much Tommy like Mel, or perhaps, loved Mel.
“Will you fight for her?” he turned his gaze towards me, slightly annoyed. “What’s there to fight for? She rejected me already” he snapped. I raised an eyebrow at his reaction. “I never thought the Tommy Eaton was such a quitter” I mocked, tossing my ice cream in the trash. “What did you say?” he questioned angrily. I smirked, turning my full attention towards him.
“Face it Tommy…you had the chance to accept her rejection today, and instead you came after me. You don’t want to accept it, because then the bond will be broken. You just won’t admit it to yourself” I saw his jaw clench as his fists tightened, breaking his ice cream cone. He tossed the cone angrily into the trash before cleaning his hands.
“What the hell am I supposed to do then?” he questioned angrily. “Either man up in accepting the rejection, or man up and fight for her. Either way you need to man up boy” he rolled his eyes at me as I grinned. Who was he fooling? He was smitten by her, and even if I’m angry at Mel for hiding this from me, I have a feeling there’s more to the story than what they’re letting on.
