The heaviness in her limbs betrayed her. At some point, between the tears and the silence, between the haunted memories echoing inside her chest and the suffocating stillness of Alec’s mansion, Melissa had dozed off. She didn’t remember closing her eyes. She didn’t even remember crawling into the cold corner beside the carved wardrobe, still dressed in the heavy black bridal gown , she hadn’t removed, her bangles bruising her wrists. But when the knock came, it pierced her consciousness like a jagged stone shattering glass. Knock. Knock. Knock. She stirred. “Ma’am…” came a soft voice from behind the grand door. “Someone has come to see you…” Her eyes shot open.
