Chapter 71 Vanya I didn’t know what came over me. I still don’t. I was supposed to save myself. That had been the deal. Kyle’s voice had echoed in my ears long after he cornered me in the corridor before the interrogation. Calm. Icy. Deadly. “One statement against Kross,” he said, “and all traitor charges against you disappear. Simple.” He’d made it sound easy. Like checking a box. I was the only witness. The only thread holding the case together. And in return for damning Kross, I’d be free. It should’ve been an easy decision. But it wasn’t. Because the moment I stepped into that cold, sterile interrogation room and met Kross’s eyes—my mouth refused to form the lie I had rehearsed. Something inside me cracked. I wasn’t supposed to care this much. He wasn’t supposed to matter.
