“You seem distracted today,” Marcus observed the next afternoon after he’d pinned Charlotte down on the mats and she’d failed to get out of the hold. He released his grip on her and helped her get back up to her feet. “Sorry,” Charlotte sighed, unsuccessfully trying to shake off thoughts of her mom. “Do you think we can skip sparring today and just do some cardio and weights?” she asked, knowing her lack of focus was making her a poor and even dangerous sparring partner. “Sure,” Marcus replied easily, probably thinking the same thing. She was grateful that he didn’t ask if she wanted to talk about it. “Oh, I spoke to Jacobs today and he agreed to let the women in his class train with me if they want to,” he said. Charlotte blinked in surprise. “Just like that?” she asked skeptically
