"Carlene?"
I looked up at the questioning face of Duncan before he continued his question, "are you alright?"
I looked down as I nodded in answer. My thoughts kept going back to what had happened just a few moments ago. After the staring episode had gotten over everyone's eyes had shifted back to West who was standing before the still shocked Coach Michaels as he straightened coach's jersey and zipped it up while saying in his deep alluring voice, "that is what a worthless jerk can do. And get yourself a good lawyer because you will be meeting mine in the court for being a teacher who abuses the students."
With a hum, West patted coach Michaels' chest in a mock before walking out of the auditorium, leaving the coach to fall down. Literally, in shock. Especially when Dylan came out of the crowd waving his smartphone mockingly, like he was announcing that he had everything shot.
It sure did look like coach Michaels had ended his own career trying to take a stand for his favourite singer. It was very clear that he was a die hard fan of Louis, who had placed Louis at the top most position for his voice thinking no one else could touch his level. But that was until West proved it to be otherwise.
"Are you even listening?" Lavinia's voice dragged me back to the present. I looked up to find an annoyed Lavinia standing before me. Wait wasn't it Duncan all this time? When did Lavinia come?
"She's been spacing out the entire time," Duncan who happened to be standing behind me replied on my behalf making me jump in the process and turn to look at him but ended up bumping my head into the locker which was right beside me, "ouch..."
"Gosh! How clumsy can you be?" Duncan stepped forward, pushing my hand which was rubbing my forehead away before he started rubbing the sore part.
What was wrong with me? Why was I behaving this way?
"I heard that West sang in the auditorium and managed to sound like a rockstar?" Lavinia asked excitedly hoping to get some juicy details.
Duncan snorted, "rockstar wouldn't even cover how he sounded."
There was a lost look on Duncan's face when he tried to explain West's singing more accurately, "he sounded like the best of the best traits of the best of them all singers from all around the world put together. Like he was from some other world."
I wanted to point out at the amount of 'best' he had used but Lavinia beat me by exclaiming, "Really?"
There were sparkles in Lavinia's eyes as she asked, "Which song did he sing?"
"I don't know. Have never heard that before today," Duncan mused crossing his arms across his chest.
"At least, what did it sound like? The words? What words did he sing?" Lavinia placed her hands over Duncan's arm as she slightly shook him, with hope blooming in her eyes.
"Come on, Lavinia! That was the first time I had heard that song! How do you suppose I remember the lyrics?" He exclaimed incredulously.
"Come on, at least a little. Only a few words," Lavinia cooed trying to pursue Duncan to comply.
I could see the taints of redness shadowing his cheeks as disbelief took over his features. His eyes shifted towards me for a brief moment but they moved back to Lavinia. Never would have ever he imagined that he would be seeing this part of Lavinia's personality. All she had provided Duncan with was a bratty attitude and arrogant words. And now that she was acting all sweet and nice, Duncan was definitely not following her approach, resulting in her to accomplish what she wanted.
"Okay okay, I don't know exactly but he sang something like 'when the day's... When the day's gulped by night...'" Duncan had started but before he could finish, "When the Day's swallowed by night
And moon hides in the plain sight
Only the ray of hope shall shine
With a twitch in flow of time
Heed the calling in this song of mine
While I await for your sight to reappear."
It took me a second to realise that the words of West's song had come out of my mouth. My very own mouth! And it was because Duncan and Lavinia were looking at me like I had grown another head.
"That... Was the words of his songs," I explained feeling the nervousness seep into my blood.
What the hell was happening with me?
"That. Was. Amazing!" Lavinia breathed out before giggling out loud and getting dazed about it, "oh my gosh! The words sounds so good, I wish I would have been there in the auditorium to hear him sing..."
"How did you do that?" Duncan's surprised voice dragged my attention towards him. His brows almost touched each other as they furrowed making me shrug, "I don't really know. Maybe those words never left my head after hearing it once."
I pretended to be nonchalant. Like it didn't really matter, while on the inside I was questioning myself about it again and again. The ringing of the last bell caught our attention. Soon the corridor was filled with exhausted students coming out of all the classes. Our last period of the day had also been wasted because of the stunt the coach Michaels had pulled.
"Listen here folks!" The shouting of a familiar voice boomed through the air, attracting all the attention that he demanded.
"Typical Mitch," Duncan mumbled rolling his eyes.
There in the center of the crowd stood Mitch cupping his hands around his mouth to be louder than usual.
Like he wasn't loud enough already.
"In the celebration of coach Michaels finally getting fired and thrown out of this school for good, we've decided to host a bonfire party!" People cheered and hooted at Mitch's words. Seriously, everyone had wanted coach Michaels out for as long as anyone could remember. He surely was a pain in the neck and thanks to his own foolishness and West's way of tackling the situation, he once and for all was out of this school.
"You can find all the marshmallows and chocolate that you want for s'mores," Mitch spoke.
"And drinks too," Mitch's best friend Reed added.
"Yeah, drinks too!" Mitch nodded, "but if you want anything else, you get that for yourself! The party's at seven in the evening. I'll post the location on my social media sites! Hope to see you all there!"
There was a lot of chattering that started after Mitch's announcement. People were already deciding what they were going to do or what they were going to wear.
"So you coming?" Duncan looked at me making me shrug.
"I don't know. I haven't asked my mom yet."
"Oh come on, Carlene! You mom won't be at home till eleven in the night! You can enjoy the party till ten and be home by eleven," Lavinia said as she smiled to herself looking somewhere else.
Involuntarily, my eyes followed her sight and found the Adonides standing nearly at the end of the corridor, away from the other students and their excited gossip.
"Do you think that he will come?" Lavinia asked me, her eyes never leaving the Adonides, or more particularly, West.
"How would I know? I'm not him," I replied feeling annoyed. Why was she even asking me this sort of question? As if he tells me everything. As if he was close to me. My eyes sneaked a glance in his direction without my permission and when at the same time his eyes snapped up to meet mine, my breath got knocked away.
"Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! He's looking here!" Lavinia's excited voice along with her stupid jumping didn't really matter to me.
"Do you thinking he's looking at me? Does he like me?" Lavinia further asked when I didn't acknowledge her. I was too busy trying to look away from him but failing really badly. And when I really didn't answer her again, she took it upon herself to get all of my attention by grabbing my elbows and shaking me till I got out of my trance.
"Huh?" I really didn't know if I was glad or pissed at what Lavinia had done. A part of me wanted to punch her while another part of me wanted to hug her for getting me out of that tensile strong eye locks.
"He is interested in me, right?" Lavinia asked. Her eyes twinkled with hope. Even though she was irritating, I didn't want to break her heart by being upfront nor did I want to give her false hope. It was West we were talking about, not Duncan! He was very unpredictable and strange... He chased people away only to attract them more than ever.
And the way he behaved with me the other day. How close had he been to sniff at the skin of my neck? And his words? His strange words in that alluring voice of his kept repeating so many times in my head that I had memorized it completely. Another thing was his song this afternoon. The words of his song stayed in my head, they still hadn't left me alone...
"Right?" Lavinia's annoyingly annoyed voice made me blink out of my chain of thoughts which she had so happily broken.
"I don't really know, Lavinia," I breathed out in frustration.
"Well, everyone soon will get that thing straight after the party tonight," Lavinia declared confidently making me even more annoyed than I already was. But I kept mum. I looked at the departing figures of Adonides from the corner of my eyes and couldn't help but think of the questions that kept coming back to me, 'who are you West? Who are you really? Or should I be asking, what are you?'
"After tonight, he surely is going to be mine. I am definitely going to get him," Lavinia's words made me roll my eyes while the spark in her eyes never faded, not even a slightest. She sure looked confident to my dismay. Looks like Mitch's words left a deeper impact on her. The words which said 'if you want anything else, you get that for yourself.'
