William pulled his hands from his pockets and opened them, exposing the front of his body to me. “Take a swing. I deserve it. Go ahead. I won’t fight back.” It was tempting to pop him one. It would feel good to give him a little payback. There were a lot of things I could do to him. Bruised balls, a belt to the gut, or a good old fashioned slap in the face. He was right. After what he’d done to me, he damn sure did deserve it. That and more. Pay back was a sweet thing. But I couldn’t do that to him. No matter how much he deserved it. No matter how much I wanted to hurt him for hurting me, I just couldn’t bring myself to hit him. I knew what that felt like. And he’d had enough of it in his life as well. He chewed his lip waiting for me to attack, his blue eyes glistening with unshed tea
