Mia dragged herself onto the mossy bank, clothes clinging to her shivering body. Night had fallen, the forest dark except for moonlight filtering through pine branches. In the distance, the mountain where the Sanctuary had been continued to rumble with explosions. "Logan!" she called again, voice breaking. Only forest sounds answered—wind through leaves, water rushing, nocturnal creatures scurrying away from the human intruder. She forced herself to her feet, following the pool's edge. Her enhanced senses picked up traces of wolf—paw prints, tufts of black fur caught on branches. The trail led into the trees, away from the water.
