Chapter - Sixteen

1173 Words
Dexter’s POV It was 11 pm when I came back home and collapsed on the sofa. It was a very tiring day since I was busy from morning. I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing by being suspicious about George being the mastermind behind all of these kidnappings. I should be extra careful because if he isn’t the kidnapper, then I might lose my job for having a suspicion on a senior detective without any proper evidence. He does seem like a dangerous guy. I went back to my room and took a long hot shower. I started checking the unread messages as I relaxed on my bed. I smiled after I read the long message from Stella. Her message was filled with motivation and funny things to cheer up my mood, she knows exactly what to do when I'm sad. She was worried a lot about me since I got screwed by the director and I was depressed. I was feeling bad in the afternoon since she was so tensed about me and I was not in the position to say anything also. I had just lost all my hope. Now the only way which I have is to follow my instincts and track George down, if he isn’t the kidnapper then I’ll have to think about some other way to lead this case or if he is the same kidnapper who has been hiding and being the mastermind of a kidnappers g**g, then I’ll finally succeed in solving my case. The main thing is, I should be damn careful while tracking him down, and no one from the department should know about this. I replied back to her message and texted for a while with her. However horrible the day might be, I’ll be so relaxed and happy after texting her. I’m very lucky to get such a perfect girl. After few minutes, I kept my phone aside and dozed off peacefully. I woke up in the morning as my alarm started ringing. I freshened up and texted Sarah that I’ll be leaving home in another few minutes. We both had decided to meet early at a cafe so that we could discuss about our plan. It would be dangerous to meet in the headquarters cafeteria early in the morning and discuss about our plan, since few people come early. As I was locking the front door I got a text message from someone. It was Stella. ‘How about a breakfast date at our favourite cafe?’ I would have loved to go with her, since It had been a long time since we spent time together properly, but I have to meet Sarah and discuss our plan as soon as possible since we don’t have much time left. Work comes first. ‘I would love that, but I have already made plans with my friend for breakfast today, so I can’t come. Let’s do it tomorrow’ I regretted lying to her. I wanted to tell her the truth so badly, but at the same time I didn’t want our plan to get ruined. I’m pretty sure Stella wouldn’t have believed in our suspicion and stopped us from tracking George down. But, lying to her is no less worse than that situation also. I kept my phone back in my pocket and headed towards the garage. Sarah was already there when I entered the cafe. The other tables were empty since it was early in the morning. She turned towards me from her files as I sat in front of her. “Morning Chief. These files have all information about him and his cases” I started glancing through the files as she continued, “Chief, he was last seen by few officers in the party which he had organised after his retirement. During that party he had told few people that he’ll go away from the city and live peacefully in his villa on the outskirts. So no one is much worried about where he has gone and what he is doing, since everyone thinks that he is just enjoying his life” “That can also be true, but if he was relaxing out there he would have at least informed Oliver or posted any pictures on social media. His social media accounts aren’t active from the time he has disappeared. Something is fishy here” “Yes Chief, and moreover he changed his phone number so that no one could track him. He probably threw away his old sim card last year. No one would go to such an extent just to enjoy their vacation. I have a strong feeling that it’s him only Chief. The one who was manipulating his cases when he was in the department without any suspicion, can do any dangerous thing by staying away, along with people working under him” “Yeh you are right. First we need to find out his new number and then track that down. We have to do it as soon as possible since we can’t be meeting secretly for long” I just wanted to end this soon so that I don’t have to lie to Stella anymore. She nodded and went to get breakfast. We started eating silently. “Chief, can I ask you something?” she asked hesitantly. “Go ahead” I replied while drinking coffee. “Is there anything going on between you and Stella?” she asked with a smirk and I went blank suddenly. It was weird to hear someone asking that for the first time, since we aren’t committed officially. “What makes you think that?” I didn’t want to answer her directly, since I wanted to know the reason for getting such a doubt. “It’s just the way you are so different and happy when you are with her. I have seen the way she stares at you. You both get along together and make a cute couple. So, I’m just clarifying my doubt. Well, no force from my side” “I don’t have a proper answer for this since we are still at the beginning stage. We are ready to get together officially, but It’s just that I have kept everything aside so that I can c***k this case. I do regret for keeping Stella on hold just for the sake of one case. I’m sacrificing many things just for this and I want to solve it at any cost” “Don’t worry Chief, we will for sure. We all are giving our level best to solve this and we’ll succeed” I nodded with a smile and continued eating.
