Chapter - Eleven

Everyone arrived home at before 7 pm. I served them with some drinks and we all sat down in the living room to discuss about what they had found and form a real plan. “ Chief, you need to look at this.” Sameer said and he showed me a key which looked ancient. “ What is it ?” “ Chief, last time when we searched the basement in her house , we didn’t find any such thing. This looks like an old ancient key of some tomb or an old house , but in reality is isn’t. I went back to the lab and tested it to find that it’s pretty new and it’s designed to look as if it’s very old and of no use.” He said. “ Does that mean if we find it’s lock we get some clue ?” Ansh asked and Sameer nodded.

“ Hmm. We should definitely search for it. Ansh what did you find ?” I asked as everyone faced him. “Nothing of importance Chief. Just that she did have some enemies or maybe we could call them jealous colleagues. They have never caused any harm to her before but yeah they have done some things to spoil her work in the past” he said.

“ Sarah?” “ Chief, as you know Evelyn is the secretary and she usually spends more of her time on her work. She lives with her roommate Lyla. Basically , Lyla said that she was a busy and hardworking lady. She used to go out with friends rarely like maybe once in 2 months or so. Lyla didn’t have much to say coz she spent less time with her. Lyla works during the night shifts. I also visited Evelyn’s mom. Her dad is doing good . But they both are very concerned and upset about their daughter’s missing. I checked her messages and saw that she hadn’t sent any message as such to Evelyn. But something was suspicious Chief. It looked like they were faking by acting like being scared and it seemed more like they knew something like this would happen. I couldn’t interrogate them more since they were still in hospital” she said.

“ Hmm . We need to keep an eye on them” I said . I was trying to come up with some plan so that they didn’t feel like they were being watched. “ Chief. I’ve a plan” Mason said. “ What plan?” “ They haven’t seen or known me . Why not use my situation to keep an eye on them ?” he asked. I didn’t really understand what he was talking about. “ That’s a brilliant idea” Sarah said and gave each other a high five. “ I didn’t get you” I said and he pointed at his bandaged leg. “ You mean you’ll admit as a patient ?” Stella asked and he nodded with a wide grin. “ You don’t look like a patient at all Mason. At least learn to act before you plan something like this” she commented and we laughed. “ It’s a good idea. You’ll get rest as well as you’ll be working. Let’s do it. Let Luna go and admit him . Luna, be there with him” I said and she nodded. “Command received” she said.

They both left immediately after having dinner. Luna called me and informed me later that Mason was admitted next to Evelyn’s dad. The rest of us had our dinners slowly. Surprisingly Ansh was so quiet . “We need to discuss about the key . Where do we start ?” Sameer asked. “ We need to search some places where we could get such old ancient looking locks maybe” Stella suggested. “ I think I know where to start” Ansh said. “ I saw this really creepy door on one of Ms. Jeanine’s work grounds. It’s like a house which was abandoned ages ago. I don’t know why but I was curious about it so I went and saw the door carefully. I didn’t have the time to enter the house so I came back. The designs on the door looked so similar to that on this key . And I think that the key perfectly fits the keyhole of the door”

“ Ok then , the first thing we are doing tomorrow morning is to visit that place” I said. They agreed and all of them left. I secretly wanted to ask Stella to stay but I couldn’t so I just left it to be. The next day morning we went to the site directly from our headquarters.

Ansh had called the head of their department to see if we could investigate that building but he denied it. He said we would need government’s permission to check. I called Mr. Charles for help and he had the permission letter arranged for us . We showed it to the people there and they let us get inside the house. It looked very ancient and creepy. All the furniture were haphazardly placed , few were even broken. “ All start searching. See if you can find anything suspicious.” I said and they all agreed.

We split-up and started searching. I was searching the ground floor living room and kitchen. I moved few furniture items and searched every nook and corner. I found few items which looked new but they were of no use. There were old beautiful paintings , few of nature and few portraits. The person who owned this house must have been interested in paintings. I moved few paintings to see if I could find something behind them just to find nothing.

“ Chief, look at this” Stella came running. She was checking the rooms in the ground floor. “ What is it?” She showed me a chain which had a locket attached to it. “ It doesn’t look like it’s an ancient one Chief.” She said. It was made of pure gold. I tried to open it . It was hard but I finally succeeded in opening it. At the same time others came down. “We didn’t find anything Chief” Sameer said. “ But we found” Stella replied.

I opened the locket to see a photo of Ms. Jeanine and another lady. I couldn’t recognise her though. What is this locket doing here? “ Where did you find it ?” I asked and she took us all to the room. “Here, it was lying down here. It looked like as if someone had thrown it or forcefully fallen here” she said. Maybe Ms. Jeanine was involved in some activity or a fight here and it fell ? “ Who is that in the locket ?” Ansh asked peeping into it. “ I don’t know . But we must find out” I said and we left from that place.

Suddenly I got an idea. “ Ansh check if Ms. Alonso had any office bestie or a close colleague here” I said and he nodded. He went and after a while came back with a lady. “ Hi, I’m Mrs. Lara Corso. Jeanine is one of my best friends . Any news on her ?” she asked with concerned eyes. “ Not yet but I’m sure we will give you a good news very soon. Anyways I wanted to know if you knew this person by any chance ?” I asked her showing the open locket. “ Yes. She’s Ms. Kate Spade. She is Jeanine’s childhood bestie. Now that I think of it even she went missing a few years back.” she said. “ Oh thanks for the information.” I said and rushed out “ But...” she was about to say something but I didn’t have time for it.

We went back to the headquarters “ Get me the missing details of Ms. Kate immediately” I said as I paced around the room . Sarah got the file and gave it to me. “ Let’s go to her house” I said and we all took off. “ Hello, I’m Mr. Dexter Lee . I’m handling Ms. Alonso’s missing case. I needed to talk to you” I told to the man who opened the door for me. He was Ms. Kate's boyfriend. It was written on the file. “ Hello, please come in” he said and invited us in.

We sat down in the living room couches and he offered us some juice. “ So , what did you want to ask me about ?” he asked. “ So, I wanted to know some things about Ms. Kate” “ Please” “ From how long has she been missing ?” I asked him. “ You wanted to ask me about Kate right ?” he asked with a confused look. “ Yes, I’m asking about her. From when is Ms. Kate been missing ?” I said. “ I’m right here Mr. Lee” a voice from behind the curtains said. Slowly some one came out to reveal herself “ Ms. Kate ?” Sarah said and she nodded. “ Yes, I’m Kate Spade” she said and we were all shocked “ About what you asked I suppose you didn’t know that I was found after 2 days of missing 4 years back?” she said and Ansh opened the file. “But is this your locket?” Sarah asked and I showed her the locket. “ No, that’s Jeanine’s she usually wears it . Where did you get it?” she asked me concerned. “ In our investigation.” I said not wanting to reveal much to her.

“ Chief, it’s here” he showed me the details of her being found. How could I miss this. That’s what Mrs. Lara wanted to tell us. I was so impatient that I didn’t hear her completely. “ I’m sorry for the inconvenience. Is this locket yours or Ms. Alonso’s?” I asked her showing the locket. “ It’s Jeanine’s. Mine is with me” she said. “ Thank you and sorry. We might visit again if we need more information” I said and came out of that place. It was so embarrassing.
