Dexter’s POV
After having lunch peacefully without worrying much about the case we all sat in the interrogation room to discuss what to do next, since I had a feeling that someone had kept an eye on my cabin. The room was silent for few minutes until Stella started speaking after looking at me “Chief, this isn’t your or any of our fault, we did our level best till now. We still can-“ I cut her off in the middle since I realised what she was about to tell, “No Stella, I’m not blaming anyone and that doesn’t mean I’m not sad. We all know what stage we have reached right now and we haven’t realised yet where we have committed a mistake. Even though we have more information about Ms. Clever’s case when compared with previous ones the case has been given to Mr.Oliver. We can’t even be sure if he’ll be ready to share the further information about case with us since he’s one of the senior most detectives”
“Yes Chief. He’s one of the most smartest and successful ones with a good track record” Sameer started praising him with excitement as if he was his huge fan. “Yeh, I had read about him in an article. It seems in his initial years he used to work as an assistant for Mr.George, a successful and famous detective” Luna replied. “Wait, was it Mr.George Evans?” Stella asked and she replied with a nod. “Oh yeh, once someone had started rumours that Mr.George used to help few criminals in their illegal activities and alter the evidences while being bribed. It’s also said that he used to do some illegal activities and then manipulate the evidences and cover up his crimes. He even used his assistant, Mr.Oliver in such activities, even though he wasn’t interested” Ansh said.
“Yeh, but after few days it was confirmed that all of this crap was fake and spread as rumours by the people jealous of their success” Sameer replied. Everyone started discussing about how much the media had pressurised on the police department during that time. As I glanced at everyone I realized that Sarah wasn’t involved in the conversation, more like she was least interested. After few minutes they concluded and everyone started going back to work.
I called Sarah and told her to stay back while others left the room. “Yes Chief?” she asked with curious or mostly impatient eyes. “What do you think about Mr.Oliver and Mr.George? Like your opinion on those fake rumours?” I directly came to the point since I didn’t want to beat around the bush. “Just the same as others told” she replied with a shrug. “Then why weren’t you involved in the conversation and lost in your own thoughts? Because you aren’t the type to just ignore the discussion about anything unless something’s really bothering you or if it is fake”
She was silent for a while, maybe figuring out how to get started with her explanation, and then replied “Yes Chief, I wasn’t interested in glorifying Mr.George after he was accused of so many illegals activities. Right now everyone believes that he is innocent, but he isn’t! After the rumours began I started doing my own investigation and kept an eye on him most of the time. I went through most of his case files and their conclusions seemed uncanny to the given information above. Before rumours appeared even I wouldn’t have had any suspicion about these since everyone trusted his skills so much”
I was stunned by listening to the flaws of the famous detective, Mr.George Evans and curious to know more about her research on him. “I couldn’t conclude anything for sure from those files since it was just my intuition and moreover nobody was ready to go against him. I went through most of the files and then realized that he dealt with a case nearby my old house. I went to my old neighbourhood on the same day and asked about the case. Everyone said the same thing which was mentioned in the file. After a while, I met the aunt who used to be a bit close with me. After asking her questions and asking if she was hiding anything many times she ended up spilling the beans”
“She heard Mr.George talking about a deal with the father of the murdered girl. The father wanted to close the case soon since it had created unnecessary nuisance and his company was in the spotlight with a conclusion of some threat for him and his company. They both made the girl's friend as the scapegoat and made sure the evidences pointed at him. Luckily the aunt had heard to a part of their conversation secretly and realized about his false deeds. She was happy that finally someone had pointed at his true nature in the media, but it didn’t last longer and within few days Mr.George was declared as innocent”
I remembered the case as she explained how it was manipulated by him. I knew about that case because it was the main headlines since the case had affected the girl’s dad’s company a lot and many of shareholders were ready to withdraw because of the threat for his company. After listening to what Sarah said, I won’t even be surprised if it was her dad who killed her. I knew that humanity and justice don’t stand a chance in front of greedy people thirsting for money, but I never imagined a detective like Mr.George to be a part of them.
“What about Mr.Oliver?”
“ I don’t know much about him Chief, but he seems to be genuinely sincere. It’s true that he used to work for Mr.George and help him in such activities too, but I’m not sure if he did that on purpose or because he was forced to” Both are possible, but I feel like he is innocent and was forced to do, just like Ansh mentioned earlier.
“Where is Mr.George right now?”
“He got retired a year back Chief, but there’s no sign of him after that. Few say that he is staying in a country side villa, enjoying his life after working hard for so many years. But I don’t know if it’s true or not”
“What about his family? Wife and children?”
“His wife died in an accident few years back and he didn’t have any kids. And there are no close relatives of him too, so he is basically alone. Even Mr.Oliver doesn’t know where he has gone”
“Hmm, a famous detective with a really good track record, who is actually manipulating cases for the sake of money, suddenly disappears from the city after his retirement. Either he is doing some bigger illegal activities for money or actually enjoying his free time like people think. Date of his retirement?”
She checked in her phone and replied “Last December on 14th. Chief, this may sound a bit odd, but how come these savant k********g started from Jan, like just after a month of his retirement?”
“Even I was thinking the same thing Sarah. This might be a mere coincidence, but right now we can’t ignore any single fact regarding this case. We need to find out where Mr.George has gone and check if he is the one behind all of this. Let this be among us for now, because we may waste time in convincing others. We’ll have to track him down soon and see what he is up to”
