Chapter - Thirteen

Dexter’s POV

We got inside the car and started wondering how could we be so impatient and not listen completely about her. “Oh my god. That was super funny and embarrassing” Stella said sarcastically and earned a death glare from everyone. “ Sorry.” She said raising her hands in defeat. “But seriously how could we miss such a big detail” she said. “ True. We were so desperate to find a clue ” Ansh said. “ Ya. But I’m still not able to understand one thing. We double checked every nook and corner of Ms. Alonso’s house, especially her basement. How come we didn’t find the key that day?” Sarah said.

Everyone looked at her in utter shock. “ Brilliant. That’s where we missed the whole point.” Sameer exclaimed. “ I think someone is spying on us like Chief said . That’s why they must have kept this key and locket to divert us . But what was the use of diverting us?” he asked and I started thinking. Whatever he said was true. This was a false evidence and a huge diverter. But why?

As we were sitting in silence busy with our thoughts, Stella’s phone started ringing, “ Hello........... Oh........... Ok , I’ll inform everyone” she said and hung up. I had a bad feeling about that. “ Chief, what Sameer said was true. This was a huge distraction and we fell for it. Another known famous savant has been kidnapped” she said. I rested my head in my hands and then didn’t utter a word. This is bad. How could I do this ?

We went back to the headquarters to get the details of the savant. Just as we entered the building John came running towards me. He was the coordinator of the headquarters. “Hey, Dexter. The Deputy Director wants you in his cabin. He sounded grumpy, better be careful” he cautioned and went out. I understood what was awaiting for me. I calmed myself and headed towards the first floor.

I knocked twice on the door. “ Come in” he replied and I entered. I didn’t dare to sit down but he signalled me to, so I sat. “ So, Mr. Dexter Lee . What was the case for which you have been called here?” he asked by staring at me with furious eyes. “ Um....... Ms. Jeanine Alonso’s missing case” I replied. “And what’s the progress in HER case?” he stressed on the word her. I remained silent because there was zero progress in her case.

“ Exactly. Zero and that’s why you are silent. It’s fine if you take up other cases Dexter. It’s fine if you think that all those cases are linked and you have the capability to solve everything because I know you do have that. But don’t you think you should also look at the time constraint we have and act accordingly? From the time you have come here to solve her case another 2 kidnappings of famous people have occurred. You can’t let this happen” “ Sorry sir. I’ll make sure that this case will be solved as early as possible” I replied. “ No. You are going to solve this case in another week and if you can’t, then you can go back to Vancouver. We are planning to bring in few of our very talented and senior detectives.”

I was sitting in my cabin recalling everything that had happened. I had never in such a situation being left with a deadline and a warning. ' Remember Dexter, one week is all you have to either solve or leave' his words had been playing over and over again in my mind. Sarah and Ansh entered the cabin and stared at me. “ What’s wrong Chief?” she asked. “ We have been given a deadline or should I say I have been given one” I said with disappointment.

I told them everything he said and then they consoled me. “ It’s ok. Give me the details of the missing savant” I asked them and Ansh started presenting it to me.

Saw two people come out of the car, and give her a rose as a gift from few donation centre and then as she fainted they got her into their car with the reason of taking her to hospital.

The next page consisted of information about her family and friends whom we had to contact. Suddenly, John came into the cabin . “ Hey” I said and he looked kind of worried. Now, I didn’t know what to expect. “ Hey, actually the deputy director has asked Mr. Oliver Easton if he could take over Ms. Clever's case and he has agreed. So, you won’t be handling it. Can I take the file?” he asked me.

Great, now I was even being thrown out of cases. I signalled Ansh and he gave the file to him . “ Sorry, and thanks for the file” he said and left. Now , I had to talk to Mr. Oliver Easton about this. I had to know every information about this case. I had heard that he’s one of the famous and senior detectives here. Must see how he takes this up and if he allows me to be a part of the case.

I started rummaging through Ms. Alonso’s investigation papers to see if I could find anything when Luna called me. “ Hi Chief, our suspicion was true Chief. Ms. Evelyn’s parents expected that she would get kidnapped. Her boss is involved in few illegal activities and also she was ending too aloof from everyone lately. She had also told her parents not to worry much about her and take care of themselves more. She even transferred like a year's worth money for her parents’ use. Her mom said that she suspected her getting any threat calls and checked her phone once to see that she had been receiving and rejecting calls from a private number . This happened like at the same time of Ms. Jeanine’s kidnapping.” She said. “ Ok Luna. See if you can get anymore info . And how’s Mason?” “ He’s fine chief” she said. We spoke randomly for a few minutes and then hung up.

So does that mean Ms. Evelyn was being threatened or blackmailed?. What if even Ms. Jeanine was threatened or Ms. Clever? All three are famous people. We need to get through it as early as possible.
