Chapter 18

Oh, how weird Ayanna was being. At Sunday evening, she was so bored out of her mind that she wished the day would be over and it would be Monday already. That was weird because she would never exchange her free time with anything else. A small part of her was whispering that it was because she wanted to see Lake again even when they just saw each other. Weirdly, it echoed throughout her body and she almost believed it. Almost but not quite. Still, strangely, her heart leaped when her phone rang and it was Lake’s name that popped out. The female did not think twice. She just grabbed her phone and immediately answered it. “Hello?” she said, trying not to sound so excited as she sat up. In the first place, she did not know why she seemed excited. It was strange. But somehow, it felt good. “Hello? Are you busy?” Lake asked from the other line. “No, not really. Why did you call?” Ayanna tried to sound coy. She did not want Lake to think that she had been waiting for his call. She really was not. After all, they had been texting since the Lake sent her home at around 2am that day. Lake chuckled. Oh, how that chuckle made Ayanna’s heart flatter even when she would not admit it just yet. “No reason, really. I just suddenly thought of you and decided to call you.” Cue more heart fluttering and stomach churning in delight. Something weird was happening. Ayanna could just not point out what it was. It terrified her as much as it delighted her. What was he doing to her? Why was it uncomfortable yet comfortable at the same time? “Yeah, you probably say that a lot to your exes, huh?” she spat. She did not really know where the bitterness came from. It just came spilling out without her being able to stop it. “Pardon?” She could not see Lake but she could imagine him frowning already. “I think you’re the first one who heard that from me. You can even survey and see that you’re the only one I called wholeheartedly.” More heart fluttering, more blushing, more everything. Ayanna had to fake a cough. “Sure, sure,” she answered coyly. “Whatever you say, Pavia.” There was a second of silence. “Are you ready for your class tomorrow?” Ayanna laid down on her bed. “Who’s ready for any class?” Lake good-naturedly replied, making Ayanna chuckle. “I don’t think anyone else. So, yes, I’m not ready for class. I don’t think I will ever be. How about you? Ready for another stressful week?” “Of course,” Ayanna snorted. “I just have to keep studying hard.” “Hearing you snort like that reminds me of the first time I see you,” Lake commented. That successfully made Ayanna laugh. “Oh, yeah, I did laugh at you at the library. That was hella embarrassing.” Then she hastily added when Lake laughed, “I did not do it on purpose though! I was not really eavesdropping at all of you. You guys were probably doing a PSA.” “I know,” Lake said. “Those guys are unnecessarily loud. They can’t help it. They act like it will be the death of them if they just shut their mouths.” “They were talking about your ex-girlfriend, Tiffany, then.” “You remember it well,” Lake teased. “Seems like someone really paid much attention that time.” “Hey, you cannot blame me!” Ayanna argued. “I was so embarrassed that time. I even got the book upside down. Ethan just had to point it out.” “Yeah, that i***t received scolding from everyone after that. Told him he should not have embarrassed someone else further.” It should not be a big deal but hearing that Lake stood up for her then made her heart race. It should not have raced in the first place but it just did. She had to shake her head a little to get rid of her weird feelings. “Ethan was being goofy as usual. I don’t blame him. It really was funny,” Ayanna laughed. “I’m surprised he made no comment about it yet. He probably does not recognize me.” “Uhm… they did say you look familiar but I told them it’s probably just their imagination,” Lake admitted. “I know you would have felt awkward if they’re to say something about it. I want you to be comfortable around my friends.” There was silence. The only thing Ayanna could hear was the beating of her heart. “Thank you, Lake. One month in this relationship and you’ve done a lot for me. I started this but I haven’t done much for you. I feel like I dragged you into this against your will.” And another silence. Ayanna was nervous. “You know, I wouldn’t agree to something that is against my will,” Lake assured her. Ayanna was supposed to be happy but her overthinking mind was thinking something else. All of Lake’s relationships were not against his will. That made her sick in her stomach and her chest. “Also, you’ve done plenty for me. Yesterday’s birthday celebration? It’s the best I have ever had.” Lake sounded extremely happy and sincere when he spoke. The female could not stop the huge smile that was spreading on her lips. She felt giddy all of a sudden. Something was tingling inside of her. Nevertheless, she forced herself to calmly speak. “I’m sure you’ve had better birthdays. That’s the best I could give you because as you know, I am a broke college student unlike you who receives monetary allowance for representing the school or unlike any other student who have work. Also, Kurt and the rest were not being helpful.” Lake laughed. “What did they tell you?” “Well, when I tried asking for things that you like, Kurt simply replied with a ‘he will like anything you give him’ or something like that,” the female did a mocking imitation of Kurt’s voice. “He did have a point. I would have been happy with anything that you give me.” “Is it just me or are you cheesier today more than ever?” Ayanna joked, trying to not get affected by whatever the guy was saying. “Never mind,” Lake chuckled. “We still have class tomorrow. You should go to sleep now.” “Sleep now too. Good night.” “Good night.” How Ayanna longed to see Lake soon.
