Neo wakes me up early the next morning. He slept a lot yesterday with all the traveling, so I’m surprised he slept as long as he did. I, on the other hand, had a very unsettled night. I had woken multiple times, my mind running a mile a minute, going over all the ‘what ifs’ and flitting between sadness and anger. Shortly after breakfast, someone knocks at the door.
I pick up Neo from his mat on the floor and go to answer the door, fully expecting it to be my dad, but when Joel’s nervous eyes look back at me, I’m hit with another wave of anger and sadness.
“What do you want?” I ask, making sure my tone reflects how much I don’t want to see him.
“I just wanted to get some of my stuff, and maybe work out a schedule to see Neo,” Joel says.
