“Was that who I think it was?” Caine asked once they were alone again. “He’s an officer doing his job,” Gus said. “Bullshit.” “Drop it,” Gus warned, returning to Nailah’s side. “He’s going to cause problems again,” she quietly muttered. “Nothing to worry about,” Gus kissed the top of her head. “Don’t worry about him.” Nailah sighed, reaching up to clasp Gus’s hand resting on her shoulder. He was always liked that, claiming she didn’t have to worry while he swept aside any difficulties that lay in her path. Without a word, he cleared out financial troubles so she could continue helping dogs and cats. He got rid of unsavory people giving her a hard time and ensured her days were peaceful. Not once did he mention the trials he went through to make those things possible. Caine watched
