1. PROLOGUE
Every year, this day is the only day that I always wish never comes and I know my mom feels the same too. This is the day that I lost my father five years ago. I'm not from a rich family and my father didn't have a lot of money too but he loved us so much and even after all these years I still remember that. After his death, my mother was so miserable and I don't blame her. My father was the love of her life and I doubt she ever thought she would have to live without him one day. I never did too, you see my father always made me happy. He would take me to school every day before going to work and would cook for us during Sundays. Sunday meals are not the same without him, my mom cooks everything he would cook every Sunday but even though she makes delicious food, it's not my dad's. When my dad left, mom started working in a diner a few blocks from our house and we use her salary to cover all the bills in the house. I know with the way things are, I'm never going to college and if I do, it won't be anytime soon and I don't blame anybody. I know if my mom could afford it, she would pay for everything and all I would have to do is study hard. Until then, I will have to figure out a way to help out once I finish high school. I guess my dream of becoming a cardiologist is something I will have to forget for now, maybe I'm never going to get the chance of studying at a college. For years now I've been trying to get scholarships but my efforts always go down the drain and I've lost all hope. The last scholarship I applied for didn't even get back to me and I was devastated. Others told me I should apply again once I start the senior year and that is in a few weeks from now. I've studied hard my entire life and that makes me wonder why they won't give me the scholarship. My grades are great and they are enough to open up so many opportunities for me. Ever since I was a child, I've always known that if something was to help me live a comfortable life in the future was to study hard each and every day and I've been doing exactly that for years now. Others may think I don't have a life since all I do is study and I have no problem with that, I would rather have no life now than keep living like this for the rest of my life. I know my mom tries her best to make sure that we always have a roof over our head and food to eat but we can't live like that forever. "Brianna, are you not going to have breakfast today?" My mother's voice called from the kitchen, I didn't even know she was awake. I mean she always wakes up early but today is different. I'm always the one who wakes up early to make breakfast for us on this day, my mom usually wakes up around ten. "I'm coming mom!" I told her before I got down from the bed. I made my way to the bathroom to do my morning routine. I brushed my teeth and took a shower. After that, I put on my simple dress and tied my hair into a messy bun and made my way to the kitchen. Mom was already sitting down on a chair and enjoying her breakfast. She doesn't look different, in fact, she looks like she does every day on a normal day. "Don't just stand there, honey. Join me." She took a bite of her pancakes. "Mom, you look lovely today. I didn't expect to see you like this." I took the chair beside her and joined her. "Ah! Yes, I'm having an interview at the new restaurant in town. It just opened and the owner of the diner where I work told us about it." "Mom, that's wonderful! I mean, it's better than working at that diner. I know you'll miss them but this is amazing." "I know honey. They treated me well and also the owner talked to the owner of the restaurant, he told them good things about me. The salary is even better." "That's amazing. I wasn't expecting to see you this happy today." "I know. Your father would've loved to see us happy and I'm only trying to move on from his death, it is about time I made peace with it. "I know I'll always miss him but we have to start getting used to the fact that he is no longer with us. We will continue doing things that he loved of course." I guess she is right, it has been five years now since he died and I know he would appreciate it if we moved on and lived our lives, even though it's difficult without him. "I know it's just an interview but I am very positive that I will get this job. I've been waiting for something like this for a long time now and it's finally happening. "If things go well, who knows? Maybe I can even start saving for your college fees. I know they won't be enough to cover everything but it will be a start. "I can look for another part-time job too so that I can at least have enough money to take care of us and also pay for your fees." Oh, Mom! I don't know what I would do without her. She's been my rock all my life. I don't know what I did to deserve such a wonderful mother. "Thank you mom, I don't know how to thank you. You've done a lot for me and I know you're taking this job because of me." I smiled at her and she returned it with a small smile of her own. "Honey, I'm your mother and you know it is my duty to take care of you. I made a promise to your father that I would do absolutely anything to make sure that you never lack anything and I don't want to start failing now. "I will never be able to live with myself if you don't go to that medical school. I don't want you to settle for something less than what you want and you know that." I guess when God gave kids mothers he made sure that I had the best. I wouldn't trade this woman for anything. We continued eating our breakfast in comfortable silence. Once we finished, my mom left for her interview and I decided to go to the internet café to check on the status of the scholarship. I haven't checked my emails for two days now so I think it will also be a good opportunity for me to check that as well. The internet café is a few blocks from our house so I will just walk there. It will also mean I get to save a few bucks. I walked for a few minutes before I reached the internet café and the receptionist greeted me. "Brianna, I haven't seen you here for a while." She smiled at me and I smiled back at her, she's a good person. "Hi, Clara. I was here a few days ago but you were not in, there was someone else I haven't seen here before. I thought that maybe you quit." "I wouldn't dare, I need this job. That was my cousin, I asked her to fill in for me so that I could take my grandmother to the hospital. Her blood pressure was really high and if I wasn't there, she would've died that day. "I came back a day after though. I guess you're here for the scholarship?" "Yes, I know it's silly really but I need to know if they have responded and if I got it or not. The waiting is killing me and they should have responded a week ago." "Sorry Brianna, I know how that feels like. Don't worry though, your grades are great and I know you'll get it." "Thank you. How much will it cost? I'll be here for a few minutes." "Oh come on, just choose any computer and do your thing. Don't worry about the payment, on the house." I couldn't help but smile gratefully at Clara. I guess today is my lucky day. "Thank you." I then made my way to the empty chair that caught my eye. I logged in to the website and checked for the status. 'APPLICATION DECLINED' was written in block letters. I couldn't stop the tears from escaping my eyes. This is the last scholarship, I've been applying for months now and I don't know what to do. Clara seemed to notice what was going on. She came with a glass of water and gave it to me. "I'm sorry Brianna, I know this was your last chance. I was also praying that you get this one. I'm so sorry." She squeezed my right shoulder as she spoke. "What do I do now? I don't even know why I'm not given an opportunity to prove that I will do great next year. My grades are already great and I just need a few credits to be able to graduate next year." "I know darling and I'm sorry. I wish there was something I could do for you." I know she would help me if there was a way but I know there's nothing she could do to help me. "Thank you, Clara." I tried to smile a little at her. I guess I should check my emails before heading back home to make lunch. Nothing was really there, just a few junk mails. I checked them and then deleted each one of them. When I was about to log out, a new notification popped addressed 'CONGRATULATIONS'. Huh? I don't remember applying for anything except these scholarships that took a lot of my time for nothing. I looked at Clara and she seemed just as surprised as I was but the smile on her face told me to open the email and so I did. 'Miss Brianna North Jones, congratulations on receiving a scholarship to study at Brooklyn International School in Brooklyn. Brooklyn International School offers a scholarship to one deserving student across the country and you're the lucky winner. You can start your senior year next year and if there's anything you would want to know, feel free to contact us. The school fees are already paid off but unfortunately, you'll have to pay for the accommodation. Meal allowances are part of the school fees. We'll be expecting you on the first day of school. Please report to the headmaster's office upon your arrival. Congratulations once again, we look forward to having you in our school. Warm regards Jacob Charles Brooklyn International School Owner.' I couldn't believe even a single word as I continued reading the email and that Mr Charles personally sent the email to me. I never thought I would study in that school. Brooklyn International is one of the most expensive private schools in the country and to study there you have to be from a very loaded family. What surprises me though is that I never applied for it, I didn't even know they offered a scholarship. Studying there will open up so many opportunities for me and I know that very well. Getting a scholarship for my medical studies will be easier and medical schools will have no problem accepting me. I didn't even notice that Clara left until I saw her coming back with two cups of juice and handed one to me. "This calls for a celebration! I'm so happy for you Brianna." We clicked our glasses and drank the juice. I can't wait to tell my mom about this, she'll be happy.
