Chapter 2 A Life Worth Holding On To

Evelyn felt a sharp sting in her chest, bitter and suffocating. "Heh..." She let out a dry laugh, more in self-mockery than anything else. From start to finish, she'd been nothing but a clueless fool, thinking that as long as she gave everything she had and backed down time and again, maybe—just maybe—he'd look back at her. But deep down, she wasn't okay with it. Not at all. "Fabian, you're already married." The second she brought it up, it was like a switch flipped in Fabian. He stormed up to her, his eyes burning like they could stab right through her. "So what? I told you, you can't use marriage to tie me down. The only one I've ever loved is Gina." Evelyn bit her lip so hard it bled, but she acted like she couldn't feel the pain. Her voice trembled as she pleaded, "Fabian, we've been married for three years. I gave you everything I had. But you... you never cared. I waited for you every day—waited after work, waited when dinner got cold, waited when the bed was freezing, even waited months to see you once. And now you're telling me all this time... you only loved my sister? Fabian, do you even care how that makes me feel?!" But Fabian didn't budge. If anything, he looked even colder, the icy edge in his eyes sending shivers down her back. Veins popping from his temple, he grabbed her chin roughly and snapped, "You brought this on yourself! Gina was pregnant with my child, but thanks to your tricks, she lost the baby and can't have kids again. If it weren't for that, there's no way Grandpa would've forced me to marry you!" The sharp pain in her jaw made Evelyn flinch, but she still begged, "I didn't... I explained it so many times... why won't you believe me? I swear I didn't do it..." Fabian looked like he couldn't stand another word from her mouth. He shoved her with all his strength like he was tossing away something worthless. Her head slammed into the edge of the table with a dull thud. Blood started to stream down immediately. Standing over her, Fabian towered with a look colder than she'd ever seen before. "Evelyn, that baby Gina lost? You owe us that life. If you ever try to use this marriage crap on me again, I swear I'll kill you." Evelyn clutched her bleeding forehead, gasping for breath on the floor. Tears and blood blurred together as they slid down her face, her world spinning in a haze. Fabian didn't even glance at her again. His phone rang. He checked the caller ID, and without hesitation, turned away and walked off. She could hear the soft, tender way he said Gina's name. That tone—he'd never used it with her, not even once. Her body ached all over, but the pain in her heart was ten times worse. The moment Fabian walked out, Evelyn finally broke. She couldn't hold it in anymore and burst into tears. Tears hit the cold wooden floor one by one. They'd been married for three years, and he'd only touched her a handful of times—and that was only when he was drunk. His heart was always set on Gina. He never even saw her. Evelyn had loved him too, just as much. After crying for what felt like forever, her stomach churned, and a wave of nausea hit her. She bolted to the bathroom and started dry heaving hard. "Ring ring." When she finally came out of the bathroom, her phone was ringing. It was from the hospital. She picked it up. "Mrs. Jackson, we've got your test results. Congratulations, you're pregnant." Evelyn froze. Her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor with a dull thud. She quickly wiped the blood off her face, and for the first time in forever, a smile flickered across her lips. She was pregnant? Right when she was ready to give up on him... she found out she was carrying his child? It felt like finding water in a desert. Hope exploded in her chest like spring rain after the drought. She gently rested her hand on her stomach, her fingers brushing in small circles. No matter how hard it got, she wasn't going to let go. For this baby's sake, she would push through everything—to give them a real home.
