He had almost made it out of the building when the alarms went off. Loudspeakers blared, people started running, confusion was all around him. Alain pretended to become a part of the confusion, letting his telepathic abilities carry him along with the rest as he made his way slowly toward the outside.
Most people did not know what the fugitive looked like, and the few patrols that did were easy for him to avoid because he could sense them coming. He reached the outside without serious incident, stole a limousine waiting for some important officer, and drove into the center of town, where he abandoned the vehicle and walked the rest of the way to the hotel where he and Laya had been staying.
