Chapter 23 The Warehouse

1401 Words
An hour later, Jordan and Ryan arrived at the ninth pier. There were no fishing boats docked here, only some cargo ships. Therefore, there are several rows of warehouses in the port area. The cargoes unloaded from cargo ships were in the warehouse. There were silk and porcelains from the far east, all kinds of specialties from the New Continent, and weaving from Amur in the south... This place was heavily guarded. Jordan didn't bring Ryan to the ninth pier. Instead, he turned a corner and walked along the winding alley for more than ten minutes. Then, he arrived at a warehouse area. Rows of rooms were silently arranged, like rows of soldiers. There weren't many street lamps, only one in a far distance. The lights were dim, and most of the buildings were hidden in the darkness. There was no one in the entire warehouse area. It was exceptionally quiet. The sea breeze blew over and hit the roof. Occasionally, there was a loose iron sheet that trembled in the wind, making a whirring sound like a ghost crying. The sound of footsteps rang out on the cement floor, pattering. James walked to Ryan's left, a step ahead of him. He was talking about some interesting things perpetually. This warehouse area was rented out. Many middle-class families had miscellaneous items. It was a pity to throw them away, but they took up space at home. Therefore, they put those things in the rented warehouse. They only needed to pay a small amount of rent every month. In total, it was more cost-effective. According to James, since the heavy rain last time, the basement was leaking. His family rented a warehouse and put all the things in the basement into the warehouse. The letters and other relics left by Ryan's mother were also in there. There were still guards in the warehouse area. When they entered, James shook hands with the old man who guarded the door. Ryan did not know how much money he had stuffed into the other party. Otherwise, they could not enter. Before this, Ryan gave James five Louis. Whether or not the road expenses were as much as five Louis, it was questionable. Ryan was standing far away. His hat was pressed very low. He was a few meters away from James and the old man at the door. After the handover was completed, the old man returned to the door and opened it. He walked on the left side of James and walked in side by side. After going deep into the warehouse area, not long after, they turned into an alley. "It's right ahead." James said, his voice trembling. "Are you cold?" Ryan softly asked. "The wind is strong." James replied, then stopped talking. He walked to the bottom of the alley and arrived in front of a warehouse. James took two steps forward and took out the key from his pocket. Then, he stood in front of the door and unlocked it. After hearing the sound of keys colliding, the door was pushed open by him. Ryan stood outside the door, motionless. "Wait a minute, there is an oil lamp here." James' voice came from inside the room. Not long later, a light lit up in the warehouse. The light dispersed the darkness and rushed out of the room. It entangled with the street lights outside the alley and merged in Ryan's sight. James poked his head out from behind the door. "Ryan, come in and help me. There are too many things. I don't know which ones were left by your mother..." As soon as he finished speaking, James' head shrank back. Ryan was silent. He didn't say anything. He looked back at the alley behind him. The lights of the street lamps were swallowed up by the long alley. It was dark and there was no way to see the other end of the alley. He smiled and lifted his hand to take off his top hat and threw it to the side. The slender cane jumped between his hands, and finally, his right hand gripped the head of the cane. Ryan raised his head and strode into the warehouse. The light came head-on, dragging his shadow long on the ground behind him. The room was empty. There weren't any items in the warehouse that James had mentioned, but there were a few people. As Ryan entered, someone lit a torch. The room suddenly lit up, allowing Ryan to clearly see those people. At the front, a dark-skinned old man was sitting on a chair with a crutch. The chair was next to a pillar. The old man wore a one-foot-tall silk hat and a black tuxedo. He had a red scarf around his neck and a pipe made of boxwood in his mouth. The pipe was filled with flaming tobacco. The smoke rose and made his face flickering in the fog. James bent down and stood next to the old man with a flattering smile on his face. Apart from that, there were also a few people scattered within the warehouse. They were either far or close. Some were in his eyesight, others were in the dark, with an appropriate distance between each other, forming an encirclement against Ryan who had entered the door. Behind him, there was a rush of footsteps. There was no need for him to turn around. Ryan already knew that someone had rushed over from the alley, cutting off his escape route. Ryan listened to the chaotic sounds of hurried footsteps. Soon, he concluded. Three people. Three people came from the rear. Adding the people in the room, there were a total of nine people apart from James. What a big occasion! Ryan took two steps forward, then stopped and looked at James. "James, what is the meaning?" James turned his head, not avoiding Ryan's sight. He shrugged and spread his hands. "Lil' Ryan, this is all your fault. You offend someone you shouldn't offend. I have no choice... How good would it be if you signed that contract? At this time, you are most likely enjoying the sunshine on the voyage ship, right?" It was also possible to be thrown overboard. James added in his mind. "Why?" Ryan took another step forward, his cane gently leaning against the ground. He stared at the old man sitting on the chair. The old man took off the pipe in his mouth and blew out a smoke ring. "Boy, there are some things that you shouldn't know." Ryan narrowed his eyes. "Who are you?" The old man smiled. "You can call me Cripple Wade. Child, it's better to be quiet. I will ask them to make you die in peace. I won't make you suffer." Just as Wade spoke, a person circled out from the pillar behind Ryan. He was dressed like a sailor, holding a Magic Stone pistol in his hand, and silently appeared behind Ryan. The man raised his hand and the muzzle moved up. It was only four or five steps away, and it was impossible to miss such a close distance. Normal Magic Stone pistols did not have a long-range, and it would be difficult to aim for more than five meters away. After ten meters, it would be even worse. It was impossible to draw a bead. So, that guy took a few steps forward before preparing to shoot. "Child, if you become a ghost, remember to come to find me!" Wade laughed. In order to cover for his subordinates, Cripple Wade, who was originally silent, was acting very exaggeratedly at this time. He was especially different at normal times. A lion had to use all his strength to catch a rabbit. Moreover, this youth in front of him was not a rabbit. The first operation failed and two of his subordinates died. That was why he set up a trap and brought along a few experts from the g**g. Moreover, he even used a Magic Stone pistol. It had to be known that using firearms was a serious crime. Even the Security Bureau would intervene. If this matter blew up, even the person behind him might not be able to protect him. However, in order to be foolproof, he still decided to do so. Behind Ryan, Wade's subordinate raised his hand and pointed the g*n at the back of Ryan's head.
