Maelis I was already awake before the sun rose, staring at the ceiling of my room with blank eyes. The shadows flickered along the walls as dawn crept in through the heavy curtains. A headache pulsed behind my temples, throbbing with each heartbeat. I reached for my phone on the nightstand, fingers brushing past the half-empty glass of water, and checked the messages for the hundredth time. Still nothing new from Jared Stone.
