Iris
After arriving at the pack house and making sure everything was fine with Misty and her pup, I went to take care of my cake and call Colton to meet me in the kitchen. We were surrounded by omegas, so the Alpha could hardly see any issue in it, right?
Suddenly, Sapphire jumped in my mind, “Iris, Iris, I had this dream about a very handsome wolf. He was very big, and his fur was fluffy and grey. I think he is our mate. But we can’t meet him, we are stuck with Alpha Z. I hope he comes and rescues us,”She barked. So, that was what she did in my mind? Slept and dreamed?
“Sapphire, someone coming to rescue the girl just happens in romance novels. In real life, we are the ones that have to save ourselves," I told my silly wolf.
“I’m all for saving my own tail. Can we run away now?" She insisted.
“It was just a dream. We have to stay for our pack. Help our pack people.” I replied, we couldn't simply leave the pack.
At this moment, Colton arrived wearing a smile on his face, taking me out of my wolf-talk. The first thing he did was steal a spoonful of meringue.
“Seriously, Colt?” I narrowed my eyes at him and he chuckled like a pup caught in the act.
“It isn’t my fault that your sweets are the best!” he beamed and my small frown became a smile. But my smile faded away when I told him about the not-so-little-Lisa incident, better said, her craziness.
“We had an argument because of her jealousy and I wanted to take a break, but she said that she didn’t accept the break.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
“What?” I shook my head at him. How could someone not accept a break? I was far from a relationship expert, but I’ve read many books and watched movies and I knew that it wasn’t supposed to be like that.
“Beats me, she said that couples can only take a break if both agree with it. If two are necessary to start a relationship, two are also needed to put it into a pause,” he explained confusedly. And I looked back at the meringue, Lisa was a nutcase.
“I will get back with her,” Colton muttered, looking away.
“Really? It doesn’t seem like a great idea,” I looked intently at him, almost burning him with my indignation-filled gaze. He deserved so much better than someone who was having jealous attacks and making a scandal that could put him into big trouble with the Alpha.
“Iris, I want to have a mate and pups, a family, soon. You weren’t the only one who grew up as an orphan. Besides not having a mom, I also lost my dad early, and having a family is really important to me. Lisa is not bad, she really loves me and will make a great mate, it was only a moment of childish jealousy. Everything will be okay once I will clean the air with her and we will make up.”
He was right and he had all the right to have a family and everything he wanted, but maybe with someone else?
“Anyone else seems like a better choice,” Sapphire chimed in my mind.
“She loves you, but do you love her back?” I thought he loved her, but I was starting to have my doubts, just like Zita. How I wished Colton was with Zita instead, they would make a much better couple, much less craziness involved.
“I used to and I will fall for her again, long-term relationships have their ups and downs.”
“Did she tell you that?” I arched a brow at him, this really didn’t sound like Colt.
“No, I read it in a magazine,” he exhaled, shaking his head, “Lisa read it in a magazine. But that doesn’t matter, it’s true. Besides, it’s not like there is someone else,” he looked at me with a funny face and exhaled deeply, before moving his gaze away.
“There are many she-wolves in the pack, Colt. But I get it, you want a family soon… I just don’t want you to regret it just because you wanted to get there fast,
“Doesn’t matter what we choose, Iris. we will always regret something,” His words and his exhausted voice took me by surprise and I almost burnt my finger as I placed the tray with meringue in the oven. He had never sounded that negative before, not even among the chaos. Colton was one of the only people I knew that had a good mood even very early in the morning; and even before having coffee!
I gave him a look of sympathy and moved around the counter, and just when I was about to pat his shoulder, the smell of frost and pine entered my nostrils.
Before I could even blink, the Alpha was behind me, his chest touching my back and radiating heated anger.
“Stay away from my she-wolf, or you will lose your position and be declawed!” his voice was deep and raw, carrying a menacing growl, man and wolf were both enraged.
I turned around without hesitation, I had to defend my friend and I knew the Alpha wouldn’t hurt me, right? My eyes were fixed on his glowing grey orbs as I spoke calmly, “Zack, I was only telling him about Lisa. He didn’t do anything, besides there are many people around, what could he possibly do to me?” To make my point, my gaze trailed to the couple of omegas working in the kitchen. Seeing that it wasn’t working at all, I took a step closer to Zack and my arms wrapped around his. He enveloped me in his arms, pulling me flat against his strong chest.
“I should punish you for that, but I will only give you a last warning! Get off my sight now, Colton! I don’t want to see you around my woman again!” Zack lashed out, his hold on me growing even tighter.
I could hardly move, let alone look to the side, but I heard the noise of leaving steps, Colton was gone. With difficulty, I lifted my face up and looked at the Alpha bear-hugging me, “He didn’t do anything wrong and he isn’t anything more than a big brother to me. The Beta, on the other hand, is not someone I trust,” I told him, omitting the Beta’s filthy proposal on the night of the introduction ceremony.
I really wanted to tell him everything, Grey deserved much more than diarrhea and all the wolves he hurt deserved justice. But I couldn’t say anything else since that was my only bargaining chip to prevent Grey from hurting the omega ladies.
Zack nodded, his chin pressed on my head, “I will keep an eye on him. No one will ever touch you, Little Wolf! You are mine!”

Zack
A few days after Iris asked me to help the witch, I caught her approaching burned-herbs smell and exhaled sharply. She was coming to my office. I opened the door before she had a chance to knock and looked intently at her, narrowing my eyes. What did she want now?
“Alpha, thank you so much for sending help, for preventing those barbarians from hurting me and stealing my things. I’ve just talked to the Luna, she asked me to move further inside the pack, at least a bit and I agreed with her,” she said as I returned to my seat.
So, Iris didn’t convince the witch to move into the pack village like it was required but rather further into pack lands. Clever and defiant white wolf! I didn’t know if I should be proud of her or angry.
“She isn’t the Luna. Take a seat, Witch.”
Misty nodded, baring her neck in submission and casting her eyes down before sitting on the dark green accent chair in front of my desk.
My office was simple and pragmatic, the furniture consisted of two accent chairs, my mahogany desk and my black leather chair, besides the tall shelves filled with books, documents, maps and all the papers necessary for pack administration. It had all the things an alpha needed, with no space for futilities.
“I want to know about the so-called bond between fated mates. Is it possible that only one of the mates feels it?” I asked, taking a measured look at her.
Among all the beings I didn’t trust, witches were on top simply because they didn’t fight using muscles and force, but in the treacherous ways of their invisible magic and haunting chants. I didn’t even understand why my father would f*ck one of them, but it didn’t matter anymore, his problems and weaknesses were long dead, along with him.
“Alpha, with all due respect, you-...” she mumbled nervously.
“Answer me, Witch!” I had no patience and I didn’t want anyone to know about it. Couldn’t this woman only give me a straight answer?
“I’ve never heard about it. Normally both mates feel all the signs, the tingles, the attraction, and the immediate identification when they look into each other’s eyes. Their souls call for each other and nothing, no spell, no one can silence this powerful call, only death or rejection, unless…” she stared and I growled, my patience running low.
“Unless what?”
“Unless in a very unlikely, almost impossible case. For one of the mates, let’s say the male, she is his first chance mate, while he is her second chance and the second chance bond ended up growing even though the first bond wasn’t ever served. But second chance mates are almost unheard of and having the second bond growing while the first bond wasn’t ever broken, seems almost impossible. The connection must happen between two souls, it can’t be one-sided,” she thought out loud, looking into space and bringing me more questions than answers, “It’s something almost impossible, Alpha. I don’t know how it could happen,” she added nervously, fidgeting with the sleeves of her blouse.
“You can leave now,” I ordered, looking away.
Misty was useless, mumbling about something impossible, was I cursed to have such luck? I was the black wolf of the prophecy, I couldn’t possibly be cursed. The Goddess even blessed me with my own white wolf to claim.
“The only other possibility is that Iris and Sapphire are hiding the fact that they feel the bond from us,” my wolf told me and I nodded in agreement, a growl burning in my throat. I would make her admit it.
My legs took me down the stairs in long strides, heading to my prized little mate in the kitchen. I stopped in my tracks, hearing unsettling words that made a feral growl of rage break through my chest.
