27. Winds of Freedom

Iris Sapphire ran at her top speed, feeling her muscles burn to exhaustion. But neither that nor the snowstorm that just started was enough to slow her down. She inhaled deeply, filling her lungs with the cold and humid winds of freedom and pushing forward. I only hoped that this time our freedom wouldn’t be short-lived. “Iris, I can hear steps, approaching paws, many of them, big and fast!” she let me know as she tried to push her exhausted leg muscles even harder. Yet it wasn’t enough, they were too close. Knowing that she would be surely caught if she kept running, my wolf hid under snow-covered bushes. His delicious yet dreadful smell entered Sapphire’s nostrils, and among the large wolves that could only be warriors and patrollers, the giant black wolf appeared in front of us.
