Chapter 17 Sunday morning, I lay in bed, drowsy and unmotivated. I’d made plans to go shopping in Forked River Creek this afternoon, and later, I was to meet Drika at her house for dinner, which I’d offered to cook for us. She was still sore and on pain medication. But it was almost ten and I couldn’t make myself get up. There was a cool breeze blowing through the curtains and the sky was overcast. Perfect weather for lounging around all day. As I fumbled for one of the books on my night stand, the phone rang. “Hello?” I answered, picking up the phone I’d left lying on my bed. “Hello, beautiful.” “Hank, damn it, I was starting to worry.” Six days. I hadn’t heard from him in six days. I hadn’t dared call his house, as I wasn’t sure if his father had moved in with him yet. “Is everythin
