The single page contained everything about him that the company has found perfect. Well, enough to work around for him to be place where he is. He doesn’t remember the stories about who his parents were, and the company didn’t have the time to even test his DNA, but they were sure his father was a worker inside it. Not that anyone was volunteering to father a random child that ended up under their sponsorship. All he knows is that he was left at the company’s front door, and they took him. They take all that was given to them, even children.
He smoothed out the piece of paper on his desk, knowing he was safe to do so. Ehryl was with her friend, and Rami was doing another overnight shift in town. Safe enough to pull out the satellite phone from inside his mattress and check on his computer what updates he needed for the job.
Mostly it’s just Damian. Random questions and photos are sent straight to him. Rarely are the assignments that the company orders him to do, but those are incredibly rare. In all the years he has been in this family as a cuckoo bird, he has only received 5. The earliest was done when he was 8, a grimy assignment that had him hitching a ride to kill a man in a strip club.
When do you leave? Damian’s texts were always concise and perfect. He doesn’t use many abbreviations and prefers to be clear. He’s a prick like that.
University starts nxt season. He replied.
The green screen showed three dots. He doesn’t think the man sleeps at all or is at his home. Last he heard about Damian’s home life is that he is married and has a daughter. The same age as Ehryl.
Okay, was all his reply.
He minimized the window and went to his profile. Just like in the paper, it showed his information. His current photo, along with past photos of him when he was still a child. The blaring words of ACTIVE beside his name continue to irk him.
Something urged him to check on his profile. He understands what his condition was and what it entails. It confused him even more. The nagging confusion continued to rile his feathers, and he couldn’t help but do his own research. There had been this strange feeling rising in his chest that he couldn’t get rid of. One he could only feel with her.
He wasn’t an i***t. He knows affection, love, romance, and that s**t. But he doesn’t know what it means to be one. A lover. He found himself reading Rami’s romance novels and finishing four books a night. He barely slept ever since he discovered the feeling. At that time, he was just 12. He always thought it was envy or jealousy, but then it started to become some sort of obsession. He had to know more about her. He had to be the only one. Those kinds of thoughts, and it was strange even for a prepubescent.
Now, he’s letting her go.
Dieth is a name he didn’t get from his mother. There was no note on him when he was surrendered to the company. That name was inherited through the training system of the company. Some old sick f**k thought giving a name to a kid that meant death would give the kid the odds to survive, but Dieth was the 5th.
And while he is still alive the name would be his until he dies, and someone else would inherit it. Some old, ancient cultish practice of bygones that the company adopted.
He’s a sociopath, and he knows he couldn’t give her anything. This affection would die with him, unlike his name. No matter his affection for Rami or Ehryl, he knows everything he has is borrowed. He owned nothing, and even if he was whatever with Ehryl he knows she hates him. She should hate him.
It’s the only thing grounding him to this plane and his madness.
His future is set. Once he finishes university, he knows he will vanish from this family. He would never see them again, and he will be stationed somewhere else with a high rank and more responsibilities, other than this boring town. Maybe his friends would be kept with him, but who knows where they’d be stationed by the company as well. Their covers with their pretend family have been strenuous and close to breaking. This boring town offered only monotony and tedium to well-trained operatives who lived through silent wars and killings. It’s a miracle they lasted as long as they did.
Dieth started at his file. Under his educational background, there was already the university he accepted filed in his profile. It’ll change in four years, and maybe they’ll add more to it if he’s allowed.
4 years. That’s all he is allowed.
He knows himself enough that in 4 years, he could bury all these feelings and move on with his life. He is the master of his body, and he has mastered every action and trained it to his preference to survive. It’ll listen to him.
His phone rings, but he lets the call go to voicemail.
“She lied,” his friend’s voice was sober and dark. “You need to come here now.”
It was those words that broke his thoughts. He didn’t even bother to pack up his desk, but he came out running through the front door with his coat. More than anything, he detested liars.
