*Analiza Valdez
I wake up in a dark room. I try to reach for a lamp but I accidentally knock it over.
I guess the glass breaking woke someone up because I hear heavy footsteps running towards me.
The door opens, letting some light in. I squint my eyes trying to see who entered the room.
I recognize the light hair man who entered.
"Ana, are you okay? I was so worried." A fimilar voice rushes to say.
"Lucas, what happened? I don't remember anything."
Lucas gently holds my hand. "You passed out after I told you that you're pregnant with triplets."
"Why do you look so tired?"
"Analiza, you have been out cold for three days. I didn't know when you would wake up. Ana, you have to be careful, you can't put too much pressure on yourself. I want you in bed rest for the next two weeks."
"I can't do that. I barely got a new job and if I don't work, who will pay my bills or food? I'm only four months pregnant, Lu." I start to panic.
"Ana, don't worry, I have talked to Miah and we agreed that you can stay with us."
I decide not to argue. Right now, I need to be thinking about my babies.
I simply nod as Lucas continues to stare at me.
"I know you won't like this but the father of your baby is coming to see you tonight."
I stare at Lucas, not processing his words. After it sets in, I sit up, "What?!"
"Ana, calm down and let me explain."
I lay back down, slowly.
After seeing that I was calm, he starts his explanation.
"First of all, I want to say that it wasn't all my fault. Okay, so when you fainted, I started doing tests on you and afterwards, I decided to just let you rest. The day after you fainted, my cousin, Andrew, came over wondering about why you didn't go to work since you didn't answer your phone. After explaining that you wouldn't be able to work because you fainted, he left. Last night, I got a call from my other cousin, you baby daddy, saying that he was coming over because he wants to talk to you about you and your babies. He still doesn't know that you're pregnant with triplets, though. So yeah, he'll be here in like an hour or so." Lucas finishes.
"Okay, so who's Andrew?"
"My cousin, your boss."
"He's married?"
"He is."
"Why did he cheat on his wife?" I accuse.
"That's where you're wrong. Andrew is happily married who is loyal to his wife. Alejandro, Andrew's brother, is not married, though. Andrew is your boss. Alejandro is the father of your babies. They are twins." He explains, slowly.
"So the guy I met was not my baby daddy?"
He shakes his head.
"It was his twin?"
He nods.
"I have a headache."
I start getting off the bed.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm leaving. I'm going home."
"But what about Alejandro?"
"Tell him what you want, but I don't want to be here when you do."
Lucas stops me again, "I can't let you leave, Ana. Not just because Alejandro is coming. When I was running tests on you, your blood showed me that you're weak. I also found out that if you go through with giving birth, you only have a 35% chance of surviving. Ana, did you know that you are Anemic?"
"I've been Anemic since I was nine. I didn't think it was important." I whispered.
"Ana, this could have been better if I had know from the beginning. Yes, it's also my fault for not checking, I'm sorry. Now that I know, you can't be left alone and you must have a lot of rest. I'm going to work my hardest to make sure that those 35% are enough to keep you alive for your children." Lucas's voice is filled with sadness.
My mind had shut down. I could hear what he was saying but I didn't know how to handle it. I might not survive? I won't be able to see my kids? The one thought that was important to me was, "How are my babies?"
"The babies are healthy. They will survive, if you decide to keep them." He whispers the last part.
"What do you mean? Of course, I'm keeping them." I snap.
"Ana, I know this is hard to think about but aborting the babies could save your life." Lucas lowers his head.
I shake my head, "No, I would never do that. I would rather die that give up my babies."
I know what I have to do. If I don't make it than their father will have to take care of them.
"When is Alejandro getting here?"
Before he could reply, there's a knock at the door.
"Now, I guess."
"Please, don't say anything to him about my health. I'll find a way to tell him later."
"Okay."
"Well, then, I guess we should let him in." I say.
Lucas walks to the door while I wipe the tears that I didn't even notice running down my face.
