Kari woke with a jolt, bolting upright in bed. Her heart hammered against her ribs and Nova was pacing restlessly in the back of her mind. She didn’t know what had woken her, only that something was wrong.
A sudden pounding rattled her door and she jumped so hard she nearly fell out of bed. The glowing red numbers of her clock read 1:32 a.m. She stumbled to the door and yanked it open to find Joe standing there in shorts and a sweatshirt, his hair a wild mess.
“What the f**k?” she gasped, clutching her chest.
“Dustin told me to get you. There was a rogue attack.”
