Evan felt drained. The nights of broken sleep were starting to wear him down. He had tossed and turned most of the night, Kari’s face, right before she’d slammed her door, burned into his mind. When he’d finally drifted off, another nightmare had yanked him awake hours later, his skin damp with cold sweat. By mid-morning, the summer sun blazed overhead, the last traces of fog long gone. Evan wore only a pair of shorts, his shirt discarded an hour earlier. He was running drills with a group of younger, low-ranking warriors, finding them easier to work with than the older ones.
