It was almost a week after the funeral when the elders called for a meeting. Kari knew it was coming. With her father gone, a new Alpha needed to be named. It should have happened sooner, within days of Ty’s death, but she suspected they had waited to give her and Mia a chance to breathe. And Kari was grateful for that. The only reason she was functioning at all was Evan. He was the one who coaxed her out of bed every morning, who made sure she ate, showered, and moved through the motions of living. He had even nudged her to resume training, assuring her that routine would help her heal. Mia was struggling too. She spent long hours with Kari, and Evan always managed to find an excuse to give them space. Kari knew how badly her sister was hurting and imagined it felt even worse for her.
