Jaxon sat frozen, his face as unreadable as stone, his golden-brown eyes staring straight ahead. His jaw was clenched, his body tense, as if he were holding back something violent and deadly. Then, his voice came, low but firm. “I’ll distract them. Run.” I blinked, my breath hitching. “What?” He turned his head just slightly, his expression hard, void of any warmth. “Left. Through the trees. You should make it out to the front in time.” My heart slammed against my ribs. I didn’t move. He was trying to save me. Me.
