"Your nausea will subside shortly," the doctor's wife said. "It's the effects of the chloroform. It makes everybody sick to their stomachs." My eyes were still trying to focus. The doctor's wife looked to be a woman in her early fifties, and the doctor was about the same age. "Well, young man," the doctor said, "you are a lucky fellow, indeed." He explained that the bullet entered just behind my left shoulder and lodged in a bone not far from the carotid artery. An inch or so farther, and it would have severed the artery. "Where do you live? And why were those men trying to kill you?" "It's a long story," I said, trying to sit up. I suddenly felt dizzy, and the room began to spin.
