Winston was gaining my respect, understanding grief a little better than Betty, having lost a few men in battles. Plus, I am not holding the anger or disappointment over Winston's behavior, when he first arrived, grieving can make a person do stupid things and that includes believing a lie, if it soothes the hurt you have over your loss.
