(Marcus) Two days had passed since my arrest. The holding cell was small and cold. The walls were gray concrete. A metal bench served as both seat and bed. I had not slept much. My court-appointed lawyer sat across from me in the interview room. Her name was Kate Mills. She looked young, maybe fresh out of law school. She had told me yesterday that the evidence against me was overwhelming. Today she said the same thing. “Marcus, they want to talk to you again,” she said. “Agent Maddox and Agent Briggs are waiting outside. You do not have to say anything, but they seem to think you had help with all this.” I nodded. My throat was dry. I had been thinking about this moment since they brought me in. There was no point in protecting Victoria now. She had used me just like everyone else. “
