I pulled out my phone and called Agent Maddox. She answered on the second ring.
"Alexander, any updates?"
"We found Marcus. He's at the Sunset Motel, Room 7. My contact confirmed he's been there for two days, paying cash."
There was silence on her end. Then she spoke carefully. "We'll send a team immediately."
"No, you won't," I said. "This is personal business now. Stay away until I'm done."
"Alexander, I can't let you interfere with an arrest. This is still a federal investigation."
I stopped walking and faced the motel. The neon sign cast red light across the parking lot. "Agent Maddox, Marcus threatened Sophie and her family. He tried to destroy everything she built. Your people had their chance and failed."
