CHAPTER FOUR

Noah panicked when he saw Alexander opening his eyes, recalling Nox’s warning. The kid was traumatized, and seeing an unfamiliar face might trigger a reaction. Noah quickly got off the bed, but it was already too late—Alexander had seen him. “Hi,” he whispered softly, offering a gentle smile. “I’m Noah, and I’m not going to hurt you,” he said, sitting on the edge of the bed. Alexander looked at him, as if trying to read him. “I’m the husband of the man who was with you earlier,” Noah added. “Are you hungry?” he added. Alexander touched his tummy and nodded, making Noah smile. “I’ll get you some food. Wait here, okay?” he said and stood up, but Alexander quickly stopped him by grabbing his arm. “C-Come…” Alexander said, bowing his head. Noah’s heart melted. Without hesitation, he scooped him up into his arms. “Alright, you’re coming with me,” he said. Alexander wrapped his tiny arms around Noah’s neck as they left the room. Noah walked to the kitchen and gently placed Alexander on the high chair, pulling it next to him. “I’m going to cook. What do you want?” he asked. “Pasta?” he added. Alexander nodded. Noah ruffled his hair and started cooking. Meanwhile, Nox stepped out of his office and went to check the guest room, only to find it empty. Then he heard sounds coming from the kitchen. He followed them and found Noah feeding Alexander, who looked completely at ease. Nox leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching the scene quietly. Noah laughed at how messy Alexander was. When he sensed someone watching, he turned and saw his mate looking at him intently. “Hi. Meeting’s done?” he asked. Nox walked over and kissed the top of Noah’s head. “Yes,” he said, then sat next to them. “Hey, bud! Sleep well?” he added. Alexander nodded shyly. “Is everything okay?” Noah asked. Nox looked at him and smiled. “I’ll tell you later, okay?” he said, and Noah immediately understood that it was serious. He nodded and gently wiped the sauce from Alexander’s mouth. “Slow down, we’ve got plenty,” Noah said with a chuckle. “Let me get some for you too, babe,” he added, standing up. Noah served pasta onto Nox’s plate, glancing over at how gently Nox cared for Alexander. A quiet ache tugged at his heart—he could never conceive and give Nox a child. He swallowed the tears and forced a smile. “Here’s yours, babe,” he said, placing the plate down. “Thank you, babe,” Nox replied, leaning over to kiss his cheek. When they finished eating, they moved to the living room with Alexander sleeping between them once again. Nox had managed to get him to take all his medicine, and now the boy was fast asleep, recharging. “What is it?” Noah asked, reaching for Nox’s hand. “Rogues annihilated his pack—nothing left but ashes,” Nox said, his anger flaring again. “And the rogue we caught said they were taking the children to the vampires,” he added, clenching his hand into a fist. Noah gasped, looking down at Alexander with pity in his eyes. “How could they do that!” he exclaimed. “You know how rogues are,” Nox replied bitterly. “I’ve contacted Walter and Darryl. We’re going to talk about this tomorrow,” he added. “What about Alexander?” Noah asked, gently brushing a stray strand of hair from the boy’s forehead. “What do you want to do?” Nox asked in return. Noah looked at him, then back at the child sleeping peacefully between them. “Give me some time to think about it,” Noah whispered. Nox smiled and intertwined their fingers. “Alright. Take your time,” he said. “Amber texted me to meet them later. You’ll be okay with Alexander alone, right?” Noah asked, a bit worried. “Jaxson’s been begging to see me—oh, that kid,” he added with a fond smile and a shake of his head. Noah adored his nephew and would do anything for him. “I’ll be fine,” Nox said. “Just enjoy the night with Amber and give my regards to the kid. I’ll come fetch you later,” he added. Noah cupped his husband’s face and leaned in to kiss him. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “Babe, what for? Hmm?” Nox asked, pulling him gently onto his lap. “Is something bothering you? I told you, you can always tell me,” he added. “Nothing,” Noah said with a smile. “It’s just… I feel like I can’t help you with work that much,” he added. “You being beside me already helps more than you know, babe,” Nox said softly. Just having Noah around brightened his entire day. He completed him—in every way. Later that evening, Noah walked to Amber and Croxx’s house, which was just a few blocks away from theirs. Nox didn’t want him to walk at first and insisted on bringing him to their house, but he refused. It was good exercise for him. As soon as he stepped inside the gate, tiny footsteps came rushing toward him. “Uncle Noah!” Jaxson cried out, his little feet pattering across the walkway. He threw himself into Noah’s arms, giggling with excitement. “There’s my favorite little wolf,” Noah said, scooping him up and spinning him around gently. Jaxson squealed with joy, and Noah felt a warmth spread through his chest. “Glad you made it, boo,” Amber said, kissing him on the cheek. Noah did the same. “Of course, Bear. I wouldn’t want to disappoint this little one,” he said, pinching Jaxson’s nose and making him giggle. “I heard about it from Croxx. I hope the kid's fine,” Amber began as they stepped inside the house. Noah put Jaxson down, and they went to sit on the couch. “Yes, Bear. It was horrible, but he's recovering. Alexander's a strong kid,” Noah said. “But the poor child is now an orphan and has no home to return to,” he added. “What are your plans for him? Are you going to adopt him as your own?” Amber asked, making Noah heave a sigh. If anyone knew him, it was Amber—his best friend, his sister. He had once confided in her about wanting children, and they had both cried. Amber even offered to carry a baby for them, but Noah couldn’t let her go through that pain again. She had almost died giving birth to Jaxson. “I’m thinking about it,” he said quietly. “Honey, I know what’s going on in your head,” Amber said, reaching for his hand. “Don’t blame yourself for not being able to conceive. Nox loves you—child or no child. He’s not a shallow man,” she added gently. “Bear…” “My offer still stands, and Croxx understands that,” Amber said. “You know I’d do anything for you,” she added softly. “And I would too,” Noah said. “Talk to me if it gets heavy, okay?” Amber said, and Noah nodded. Their bond ran deep—Amber was one of his core people, and it would stay that way forever.
