I STUDY THE VALENTINES scattered in our display window and wonder if I can hire myself to eradicate a ghost. Although, really, if I could, would I? As if in answer, my reflection shakes its head.
No, I don’t want to be someone’s second choice, a second thought, a better-than-nothing. I also can’t face Nigel’s pity, and that’s what it will be, no matter how hard he tries to hide it. Down the street, I catch sight of Chief Ramsey pushing through the doors of the Springside Police Department.
If I can’t face Nigel’s pity, then the least I can do is take his advice.
